I love that I've never really heard anything like this from this era or even really afterwards, and I especially love how fun it is without being pretentious or even trying to be anything other than exactly what it is. I know I skipped some of the progression between Blues Traveler (1990) but this album is obviously more rock-centered, and while I miss the harmonica solos and nuanced negative space of their debut, I'd be lying if I said the catchy riffs, the heartwrenching vocals and the now plentiful guitar solos don't move me in the slightest. I love whatever mishmash of gothic rock opera this is. Favorite songs are definitely Sweet Transvestite and Eddie.
I was never the kind of person to listen to this brand of folk music, I usually dismissed it as weepy. This album in some ways confirmed that for me but expanded so well that I'm now in the zone of grudging respect. I love the slow songs just as much as the upbeat ones, and I think the unwavering catchiness and/or lyrical complexity of the first eight songs fully make up for the sort of lackluster ending to the album.
