Wet Leg’s sophomore album wasn’t what I was expecting. They’ve stepped away from much of the breezy, quirky, witty, and tongue-in-cheek charm that made their debut so special and engaging. The levity and playful irreverence of their first album is replaced here by a grittier aesthetic (more distortion, heavier production) and while there are some standout moments, much of the record falls flat when measured against what previously set them apart in the modern indie ... read more
This sounds like what I would like Grimes to have kept sounding like.
After Dogsbody and its abrasive, confrontational energy, Pirouette feels like a turning inward - a more intimate offering that draws the listener in with a surprising gentleness. It melds industrial textures with pop sensibilities, creating a soundscape that’s both raw and accessible. What stands out most, though, is its emotional sincerity: the queer themes aren’t just present - they’re lived-in, tangible, and delivered with a kind of unfiltered honesty that’s hard not ... read more
I love how they don't take themselves too seriously. And they rock quite a lot, titillating my sarcasm receptors. Quite good.
Fuck y'all this is trippy as fuck, fuck y'all fuck. Barely structural.
I was listening to this to work, not really paying too much attention. I had to pause in between, and afterwards idled a bit, completely forgetting about the music. Then I noticed I had it on pause, played it and sighed *ah this is what I was missing*
Good aesthetics dreamy for music yes.
This is so incredibly good. I can always come back to this album and wallow in this small comet that passed through the goth scene, which was short and sweet. Katharine's voice is perfect for this piece of medieval psychedelia, with beautiful waves of disturbance when the songs darken. Broken Glass is amazing.
It seems that they have reunited by I am not sure. Their official website slaps, you should check it out ^_^
Since their debut I had high hopes for Mag, but I had no idea I would feel compelled to write a couple of paragraphs about this new album. Imaginal Disk struck me at first as highly conceptual, a bit dishevelled and all over the place. So at first I was actually slightly disappointed but yet I kept returning to the album.
There's just so much to grab from, many things happen all at once yet they all work together and despite the oftentimes grim outros that provide some severity it has been ... read more
Roughly the first half is borderline insufferable, but it picks up and becomes enjoyable by the end. Wish they went all in with upbeat and folksy tunes and less theatrics.
At first listen I wasn't particularly impressed, "generic synthwave, nothing new".
But it has become clear to me that initial impression is just not true - the project clearly grew on me as I'm prepping myself up for the 5th listen. The vibe is strong and definitively there, the project oozes 80's goth synth electronic with speckles of Kate Bush, a delectable mish-mash of the best that particular decade had to offer.
The production is incredibly polished and tight, nothing feels ... read more
I cannot. I just can't. I have tried but I just can't get into the genre, it would be palatable if it weren't for the screaming.
NR since it would be unfair to rate something that does not do it for me.
Too cheeky and zany for my taste, on some occasions they seem to be trying too hard to be edgy - which is a shame, there is a good sound to most of the project, it's the vocals that bring it down a notch... Kind of uninspired and sometimes actually annoying.
Later tonight a large rattlesnake head's gonna come over Manhattan over the river and introduce us to 2012
WHOO LSD LSD \o/
Yes, it's gonna spray LSD on our heads like angel dust and we all become women.
It's been a few years since I last heard this album, and I quite enjoyed it when I was younger. Coming back to it now, I am surprised with how fresh it still sounds. It's a shame we never got to see how Kelley's sound evolved. It is very chill, groovy, conceptually interesting, and an overall gripping experience.
The tracks are peculiar enough to keep us engaged, and the vocals meld wonderfully with the kind of world that is presented to us throughout this LP. Very entertaining and cool.
This album is vastly underrated. Sure, it's a bit rough around the edges and the quality isn't all there, but they accomplish so much with so little.
It is very interesting to see this instance of the Cocteau Twins where they are still trying to find their footing, but I enjoy their dabbling through goth quite a bit. This album sounds like something the Cure would come up with (though with Liz's vocals) and I'm all here for it!
