If you consider the massive void that overtook 2000's era rock following the death of the grunge genre, the debut album from The Strokes becomes even more remarkable. Is This It (2001) is over two decades old, but it's still rewarding in new and fresh ways with every listen. At only 30 minutes in runtime, the album stylishly blends lo-fi production and electric riffs that sound like they came from a teenager's garage (in some ways that's actually true). The sound design is so intricate and detailed and unique, particularly in the choruses, which become irresistable jams within seconds. There's a few moments near the middle and end that are too abstract or aimless for me personally, but the majority of the record has so many fun and lively hooks ... read more
This record is fairly typical for Kali in both it's good and bad elements. The real draw is in the latin music influence. Kali has certainly never hid her roots before, but she's also never has them on display to this degree before. The dozens of exotic instruments and afro-cuban grooves turn otherwise basic R&B tunes into something rich, romantic, fun, and genuinely special.
