This Symphonic-Glam-Rock is a super interesting sound, and maybe the last thing I'd expect from King Gizzard of all bands. To be fair though if someone asked me if I thought a modern band could pull it off well I WOULD also say King Gizzard, especially after Phantom Island the single had come out last year. The effort they put in to make this change in sound more than a gimmick is palpable and effective all things considered. Last year's b741 was something that to me was cool as a ... read more
I reviewed this earlier in the year, and then when I wiped my account because I thought the way I was rating and reviewing albums/tracks wasn't proper. I assumed this would drop in my mind, but it seems like every thought I had on it before was genuinely what's in my heart right now. I have a bad case of ADHD so the fact I can't manage to feel bored for a second during these super long tracks can only imply to me they fail to stagnate for a second. Constant moving and progressing ... read more
The first half of this is pretty cool and genuinely shows some promise, but from Clip thru U onward things feel like they drag on a bit until the last song. There's just very little going on and even though it tends to produce a "good" vibe it's only because it's refusing to do anything that could be taken as offensive sonically. That isn't to hate, since the last track along with the first six genuinely gave me a good bit of hope, it just didn't really hold ... read more
It's hard to measure this as an album since there's a lot in terms of "filler", but while it comes out to an 86 track by track for me, if I measure it just with what is a minute and a half or longer it goes all the way to a 94. That seems like the fairer rating to give it to me at least, since if I were to sit down and listen to this again I'd sooner make a playlist of those longer songs than shuffle the whole thing.
Deltarune is a current obsession of mine, as was ... read more
Happened on this by chance on RYM, a pretty nice happening all in all. I enjoy the indie rock and slacker rock cuts off this album a ton, though the folk rock bits weaken the bunch. There's an interesting sound to grasp at here that I think can definitely be realized in the future by this group whether it's going further into the art rock type stuff they did on ラッキー or some funky stuff like on 太陽を目指してる. Can't wait to see what they do next!
Awesome to hear some modern chipmunk soul, whoever produced this did a great job. It's a cool EP and you can feel the influence of Jay-Z and Kanye throughout it, for sure gonna tune in next time this guy drops.
I'm not really done with the album yet and I can't tell how it's going to affect my life, but it made me realize something that will probably save me. During Emily's climax I nearly started crying in my campus library. It was beautiful, it froze my constantly running mind, shivers ran down my spine every other second. It felt like everything around me was crashing down but I was in space and couldn't be hurt. Despite that, my first thought afterwards was somehow ... read more
This was my first exposure to Cities Aviv, and seemingly one that doesn’t prove a lot in terms of his output as an artist given all the other big albums he has that span way more genres. I won’t let this put me off, and it was pretty cool, but certainly not my personal taste. The production is really interesting all in all, but the rapping and whisperings of Mr. Aviv are at best a positive contribution and at worst distracting and offputting. Maybe that was his intention? I really ... read more
This is the most mixed I've been on a project in a while. There's not a single weak component here in terms of the music itself. The rapping is good lyrically, technically, in terms of cadence and flows. The production is all super interesting in terms of genres it's interpolating and general instrument and composition choice. Despite that, the lacking audio quality and mixing makes the project less than it can be and is ultimately a greater distraction than the music is a ... read more
Second most recently bought vinyl, same trip as Discipline too actually! I've reviewed this album once before, but it was before I really looked at how I was rating things and realized that 90% of what I rated being a 97 or higher was a little wacky. All these vinyl ratings will probably be pretty high regardless but remember these are albums I cared enough to spend upwards of 25-30 dollars on just to listen in a different way and have them physically, of course I love them!
I have an ... read more
This is the most recent vinyl I bought! I’ve been a fan of King Crimson since before I was even into deeper music listening or AOTY, 21st Century Schizoid man was a song I played a lot on Guitar Hero 5 on my X-Box 360 and it got referenced a ton in Jojo’s Part 5 back when I was into that too.
Red and Court of the Crimson King are two albums I absolutely adore, and until I’d heard Discipline I thought it’d be the same experience, but it just isn’t in the same ... read more
Quadeca isn't the greatest singer of the modern era, or the best rapper, or the best instrumentalist, or the best producer, and he only might be the best writer. Despite this, an album highlighted by his singing, rapping, instrumental skills and production, and especially his writing is the best one I've heard in a WHILE. His is the best artistic mind the current generation of musicians has. He takes so many influences here all while doing a hundred other things I can't envision ... read more
Super vibey project showing off some of Tyler’s producing chops, easy to enjoy but nothing earth shattering. I don’t know what more people would expect from an album he made in less than a year while touring the whole time, it’s super impressive for what it is and a good sign for the future if this cool style of beat stays as an influence with him.
GOODNIGHT HYPNOPOMP is STOMACH BOOK's third album, and potentially my favorite album of the entire 2020’s so far.
The noisy emo tones covering the entire album aren’t new at all. Come In and Hornet Disaster by Weatherday, Frailty by Jane Remover, all of Parannoul’s discography, and before them even Pinkerton by Weezer, all similarly emo and noisy rock projects. Despite that, GOODNIGHT HYPNOPOMP’s edge gained by its insanely deep and active production as well as how ... read more
This is some of the best feature-work I've ever heard oh my fucking godddd.
John Legend's voice is super beautiful, Kendrick is a lyrical maestro like always even if he sounds a little stiffer (?) than usual, Tyler's verse is AMAZING like maybe one of my favorite verses he's ever had, even Pharrell's vocals are cool!! Beyond the other big ticket dudes though Nas is the easy highlight. He literally murders his verse in real time and you just have to watch him go and go ... read more
Truly magical.
McKinley Dixon is someone I wasn’t particularly familiar with before this album rollout began, only having seen his previous album “Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!” in passing glances. Despite this he managed to become one of my most listened artists on the year before this album even released, just from the first three singles alone. He raps incredibly smoothly without lacking effort or energy, and it seems like he could flow on just about anything from the lowkey ... read more
Ok since I added this and it's easily my favorite release from the band, I'll explain myself here. Polyphia's "The Most Hated" has two main releases, the global release that occurred on 7/21/2017, and the earlier Japanese release on 7/12/2017. As far as I'm aware this earlier Japanese release was due to general pressure from the people they were releasing it through, and so it has a less polished sound and more specifically seems less electronically influenced than ... read more
