How did people see this as a disappointment?? This is awesome!
This is a re-review since I purged my account some time after listening to it.
This roll out is what familiarized me with Squid's music and got me into their other music, so much appreciation regardless of quality, but the quality is literally RIGHT THERE. The instrumentation on this album gives you some really cool moments like the drop on Fieldworks II from the clockwork noises to a big soundscape with violins, as well as ... read more
I rate albums by track rating in most all cases. The reason I bring it up is that this is probably one of only two albums I could ever rate this high within that limitation. My personal favorite album of all time and the first album I ever went into with the goal of rating and reviewing it.
This album is mostly popular for its one single, F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X., and that's also how I got into it to be fair. It saw adequate radio play, massive acclaim in the circles it was intended for, and it ... read more
This used to be my favorite album for a while!
Polyphia is a band that means a lot to me. I had been into music for a while before I really got into albums, courtesy of System of a Down and Three Days Grace especially, but I had nobody making music that was both good and new until I was shown them by my older brother. He showed me Tim Henson playing GOAT, it was the craziest stuff I'd heard in my life, and I immediately searched up this album to hear it in full because I wanted to hear ... read more
Abbey Road is one of those albums where I feel like everyone approaches it thinking "surely it can't actually be this good", and then as if the universe itself hears them they get proven wrong every time. That's exactly what happened to me. I love the Beatles, but I thought this surely must be overrated at least a bit, but it's easily just as good as Revolver (my favorite of theirs) and arguably more interesting musically because of their progression from Sgt. ... read more
The musical experience of all musical experiences. It's a disservice to try to constrain it with my own words beyond that.
It's really not bad, just middling. Songs like Fuel, Brand New Dance and Lucifer provide things to care about here and the use of AI is one of the few times I don't think it's lazy and lame as shit. The problem here is the high points are few and far between, and its inconsistencies lead to plenty of bothersome low points. that drag down the already adequate-at-best time. Not a ton of thinking to be done here regardless.
This album is very significant to me personally.
I've never been a person with a strong grasp on love or death. Asexual, aromantic, never dated, turned down everyone who ever asked. I'm uninterested, but even if I wanted to be with somebody I wouldn't toy with them by making them think they have a chance to be loved by me. Rejection scars people in various ways, and I would never scar somebody in that way for something as selfish as getting myself. Nobody deserves that. I move ... read more
I just had an experience with this album that constitutes a re-review. Same rating.
Last night from 11:30 pm to 6:00 am I listened to this album straight, no skips no interrupts. I was outside on my college campus sitting on some stone steps while just staring at the air and letting the album hit me. It was raining hard so I had an umbrella, but other than that all I had was my earbuds.
I have had a pretty constant opinion on this album, with Stages 1 through 3 being more palatable and better ... read more
It's really not my thing but damn if it isn't cool!
I was super excited to hear about a new Nine Inch Nails album coming out and I maybe overhyped for what was likely to be far from an album for them given it's a soundtrack. The dark electronic stuff going on in the non-vocal songs really is interesting but it just isn't attention grabbing like their other stuff, let alone the songs on here with vocals. Maybe I'll see it in a different light when I pirate the movie ... read more
Ok so.. I listened to another cybergrind/nintendocore album and thought "God this sound is so cool, I need more!" and happened upon this..
Without speaking of the music, the immediately negative rating, annoying album cover, and clearly shock/outrage baiting titles told me this was probably fucking awful. It was fucking awful. This is unlistenable trash far too excited for itself than even I can stand, and my severe ADHD had me socially ostracized throughout elementary school until ... read more
I know I said Subnormal Dives was easily the most interesting album I'd heard this year, but this digital-metal masterpiece might give it some push-back.
Another album I'd gotten pretty excited for from the first song and ended up wait listing, and I'm not sure how to assess if it lived up to my hype or not. It has some general consistency issues, ranging from songs like A Funeral... and Flashback which are some of the best songs I've ever heard without a doubt, and other ... read more
This is what appears in my mind when I'm not on Adderall.
I said I could write about this album for hours, and I might not do that much but I am just gonna rave about it for a bit. This is, and I do not say it lightly, easily the most interesting album I've ever heard. They have a crazy range just within metal between their abstract and crushing cuts, all while working in some crazy mathy riffs that feel more at home within a heavier rock/post-hardcore setting, and then just when you ... read more
Singular fault in this album. Not necessarily the most to gain from it lyrically. It is far from lyrically bad, but it is far from the highlight especially because they're often not so easy to hear.
Beyond my singular gripe, holy Jesus fuck that was an EXPERIENCE. My entire thoughts on this album had been constrained to what I'd heard on Gardenia while compiling albums to listen to from this year, I thought "hm, maybe another song will be as good, super interesting ... read more
It took an hour and a half past midnight for me to get access to this on Apple Music. No idea what the damn holdup was but it's a good sign this may be the first time I truly minded being held back from a twenty one pilots album.
Trench has grown on me rapidly since I started listening to it, and Clancy was a first taste of how much they'd changed from the 2014 era I'd been aware of, and by the first single I kind of realized "oh shit I'm really gonna like this ... read more
One of my four most awaited albums of the year based on its roll out alone (next to Magic, Alive!, Vanisher, and whatever By Storm is planning), and I really wanted to save it for after Breach. Unfortunately my bitch ass Apple Music has decided that despite it being forty past midnight (when I usually get my drops) I don't get to do that. I got too excited to wait any longer.
After finishing this, I can say wholeheartedly that it is the best album to come out this year so far. It is a ... read more
Another album contributing to the crazy amount of peak rap albums that have come out this year, courtesy of one of the best Rapper/Producer combos in the modern game. Alch and Freddie both hold nothing back here, but there's nothing exceptionally mind-blowing outside of the first and last track, since here they really get things going with the features. Paak on Ensalada complements Freddie perfectly to bring a different vibe to the track that fits it well, Larry June slows things down on ... read more
This is the greatest balancing act in the history of metal. I do not believe for a second anyone else could’ve taken blackgaze this far let alone broken it down to have songs that are independent black metal and shoegaze parts intersecting so perfectly. The worst song on this album is The Garden Route and even it is wonderful, it just isn’t as successful in having the vocals and instrumental mesh. It’s honestly the singular failure in any capacity on this album, everything ... read more
I put off really reviewing Apiary for a bit, mostly because it came out just as I was getting ready to go to college and I was stressed enough packing that I didn't necessarily want to dive into too much music. On one hand I'm glad I waited until this exact moment to hear this, and on the other I desperately wish I could've heard it sooner just so that this time was spent hearing it again. The clear highlights here to me are Petal Dance and Honey, two of the most quintessential ... read more
I was really surprised to find this nearly as good as the Jane Remover project, but overall even though it doesn’t peak as high it has a super consistent top end. I really like the way kmoe tackles the Indietronica sound and produces. The lyricism isn’t as grabbing and it’s a bit more melodramatic (not necessarily my preference even if it's not bad) so the production and consistency do it a lot of favors. Finding I really like all these people with the Digicore influence ... read more
Awesome short project. It's kinda hard for me to muster up thoughts about this because it was kind of just vibing the whole way. Nice vibey art rock project is probably my choice way to describe it right now.
