Although this is undoubtedly a well-crafted album, as expected with this now-iconic Scottish pair, it did fall just a little flat compared to what I was hoping for.
Inferno takes a trip into a sci-fi soundscape, with touches of Eastern influences peppered in here and there. This will likely be AOTY for me, with perhaps the only competition being the new Boards of Canada release. Honestly didn't know what I was expecting. I was mainly persuaded by the huge expectations the Toronto rapper had since the aftermath of the Kendrick beef. As I acclimatise myself more and more to prog rock of the 70s, I find myself becoming increasingly impressed by groups like King Crimson and Yes. Close to the Edge, to me, is a literal stance on the album’s contents: the music is on the cusp of what’s new and exciting.
