David Bowie - Young Americans
86

1001 albums to listen to before you die; 5/1089; from all editions of the book.

It’s a good album. It doesn’t really come anywhere close to some of the other albums Bowie was dishing out during this decade, like the Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Station to Station and Low, though.

I can see why they would put this album on the list but at the same time I feel like there could have been more exclusivity to Bowie’s absolute, irrefutable best ... read more

Ray Charles - The Genius of Ray Charles

1001 albums to listen to before you die; 4/1089; from all editions of the book.

It’s good but pretty non-eventful and not a lot of the tracks stood out, with the exception of ‘Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying’ and ‘Come Rain or Come Shine’. Also, there wasn’t much meaning or cohesiveness to the songs it was sort of like “oh here’s this one, and then, oh here’s that one”, it wasn’t much to grasp onto to say the ... read more

Johnny Cash - Johnny Cash at San Quentin
89

1001 albums to listen to before you die; 2/1089; from all editions of the book.

A triumphant live performance, I mean the applause from the audience really tells you everything. ‘Walk the Line’ was brilliant. Cash’s storytelling and humour on the providence of the ‘Starkville City Jail’ song was awe-inspiring. Cash’s performance of ‘San Quentin’ was truly a special moment; his raw, unfiltered lyrics on the flaws of prison institutions truly ... read more

N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton

1001 albums to listen to before you die; 1/1089; from all editions of the book.

Pretty good album and obviously a classic.

However, it lacked cohesiveness in my opinion and the tracks seemed to just be randomly strewn together.

Furthermore, some of the lines were a bit wack like “I’ll shove my foot up your ass” from Gangsta Gansta and “I ain’t the one to get played like a pooh butt” the latter being a pretty bizarre lyric for a ‘tough’, ... read more

Michael Jackson - Thriller

Pretty much a perfect pop record and where the legend of Michael Jackson was borne; namely due to these three great songs - Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean - all with great music videos to accompany them. It really doesn’t get any better than this.

Radiohead - In Rainbows
100

This might be Radiohead’s magnum opus.

It combines the musical eclecticisms of OK Computer’s alternative rock and Kid A’s electronic music.

This blend shows a maturity in Radiohead’s music. If OK Computer and Kid A were pioneers of their consecutive genres then In Rainbows is the combinative refinement of both these sounds to make something truly beautiful.

Weird Fishes / Arpeggi stands out especially. It’s such a unique song and the way the layered guitar ... read more

George Harrison - All Things Must Pass
95

It’s a great album with great wall-of-sound production and fantastic musicianship.

Despite being a pretty long album, it manages to be fairly consistent throughout with perhaps the odd filler song.

I’d Have You Anytime, My Sweet Lord, Wah Wah, if Not for You, Beware of Darkness, Apple Scruffs, Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp, Awaiting on You All, All Things Must Pass, Art of Dying and Thanks for the Pepperoni are my personal highlights of this album.

Various Artists - HELP(2)

Good compilation overall. Very nice array of artists and different genres of music.

Some songs were poor but they were the minority.

I think the songs that stuck out the most to me tended to be more emotive or tackling of issues like ‘Black Boys on Mopeds’ which was my favourite song of the album, despite me not being into Fontaines D.C in general.

It was particularly nice to have the age variance of artists and creative and provoking collaborations between them.

Prince - 1999

Very good. Very horny. What more could you want in an album?

Jeff Buckley - Grace
100

Pretty star-studded album.

This album has a variety of different musical styles all fleshed out to a high degree, extremely good vocals - anomalously good for a mainstream album and nigh on perfect musicianship the likes of which are irreplaceable.

Few musicians/artists can ever call themselves irreplaceable and of salient importance but Jeff Buckley sure is one of them and we shouldn’t find the brilliance in his music from the appalling romanticisation of his death but from his talent ... read more

Gorillaz - The Mountain
87

This album is immensely diverse instrumentation-wise and has a wide host of artists, some of whom are posthumously featured even, who fill the multiple facets of this album’s sounds.

However, my main praise is also my main criticism as this album was not completely consistent throughout and maybe there aren’t as many standout tracks as Gorillaz’s early albums but this leap up to form all of a sudden is great and fascinating so no one can really complain.

It’s very ... read more

David Bowie - Low
100

This album is a certified masterpiece.

It blends electronic instrumentation, ingenious compositional qualities and perfect eccentricities into a striking and fulfilling soundscape for the human ear.

David Bowie was clearly at his experimental peak with this album and listening to Low is like hearing a master at play.

Honestly, even my high praise understates how truly breathtaking this album is.

Go listen to it for yourself if you haven’t already.

Nujabes - Modal Soul
95

Very interesting blend of jazz and hip hop.

I’m not really much of a hip hop listener but this definitely appeals to me infinitely more than the traditional gangster hip hop that constitutes most of mainstream hip hop. The lyrics are much more engaging and poetic than the gangster hip hop sham.

It’s interesting, innovative and just really fucking good.

Honestly, it could potentially be an 100 upon future listens. It’s just not fully free from defect at certain points and ... read more

David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

This is a perfect album.

Although not my personal favourite David Bowie album (as you can see from my profile picture and also the albums list on my profile, I’m a big fan of Low) listening to this album is like hearing a musical revolution in real time.

For the genre of glam rock this is the absolute pinnacle and it’s no wonder that its pinnacle was created by one of the greatest songwriters of our time.

But also huge credit needs to be given to the band - the riffs here are ... read more

John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band - John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band

Very deep, personal and raw

and hip of course ✌️☮️

This album is extremely impressive songwriting-wise considering this was the first album Lennon released after his departure from the Beatles. Deep insights into Lennon’s introspection are clearly shaped by the lyrics of the songs on this album almost as though this was an album of understanding and comprehension of his character rather than simply trying to get a message across.

This album is also one of the realest albums ... read more

The Police - Reggatta de Blanc
86

Very big step up from their debut.

Their sophomore record leaves behind much of the jejune musical choices of Outlandos D’Amour and replaces it with more reggae inspired, jazzy composition and instrumentation.

Stewart Copeland’s drumming is also markedly more interesting than his drumming on Outlandos D’Amour and it feels like he’s the driver and the backpedal of the Police’s operation accompanied by Sting’s classic, syncopated, sparse bass playing and Andy ... read more

Lana Del Rey - White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter
75

Very reminiscent of Kate Bush with the vocal delivery and indeed the kind of witchy, folky, kooky style of the song.

I’m not sure if it’s really that strong of a single, I mean I think it is good that she’s going down a more unconventional route with this song but in terms of actual listenability there’s not really much to hook on to if that makes sense???

The Beatles - Let It Be
100

This is a great single and if I was living in that era and had to choose on Beatles’ single to own this would definitely be a likely contender.

It’s just an extremely well written song lyrically and compositionally but also major props to George Harrison because the guitar solo in this song is perfect (although I’d argue the solo on the album version is better) and indeed all of the little licks he plays sparsely throughout it, and to Billy Preston of course as his organ ... read more
