Conway the Machine - Slant Face Killah
78

SFK is officially 4th solo studio album from Conway the Machine.
Sound and production on this album are really good, basically it's a mixture of boom bap and trap sound.
I like him better on simplistic boom bap production and soulful production.
Lot of producers contributed on this album, some of them are Cool & Dre, Daringer, Conductor, Beat Butcha, The Alchemist, Swizz Beatz & Don Cannon.
As in previous projects we got I would say Conway's signature sound, mixture of ... read more

Benny the Butcher - Everybody Can't Go
84

4th studio album from Benny The Butcher, his first album released through Def Jam Records.
I have to highlight the production the most, absolutely top-notch production with dope beats.
Album is produced by The Alchemist and Hit-Boy.
The Alchemist contributed dark, minimalistic and muddy beats and Hit-Boy contributed high energy, melodic and triumph beats.
For me production is kind of balance between Burden of Proof album and Tana Talk series albums, but maybe those mention albums are slightly ... read more

Slim Thug - Tha Thug Show
72

Slim Thug's third studio album is slightly weaker release compared to the first two albums.
Despite of that we still got a very good album with some fantastic songs, lot of bangers and few radio friendly songs.
Maybe those radio songs are the weakest link, they sound a little generic to me.
In general songs are great, Slim Thug is still lyrically on point, talking about hood, cars, his lifestyle and his life in general.
Very good bass heavy southern production with some melodic tunes as ... read more

Trae Tha Truth - Life Goes On
83

Very slept on release from Trae The Truth.
Nothing but fire on this album, his lyrics, his flow and delivery and guest verses.
He is not only talking gangsta and street stuff, he have some deep songs when he talks about real life struggles.
Fantastic production on this album with lot of bass and hard minimalistic beats.
Mr. Lee, Mike Dean and I.N.F.O. are some of the producers.
Lot of features, some of them are 2Pac, Slim Thug, Lil Wayne, Yung Joc Jadakiss, Styles P. etc.
Quality southern hip ... read more

Trae Tha Truth - Restless
91

Restless is such a raw and energetic hip hop album, full of dope beats and flows.
Amazing production in general. Q-Stone, Mike Dean and Mr. Lee are some of the producers.
Lot of great guest verses, catchy hooks and Trae's fantastic flow.
Some of the features are Yung Joc, Bun B, Paul Wall, Three 6 Mafia, Z-Ro, Lil Keke and 2Pac.
Trae shows his versatility, creativity and authenticity and he talks about are materialistic things, life struggles, streets tales etc.
This album slaps very ... read more

Conway the Machine - WON'T HE DO IT
77

I ain't gonna lie, I needed to listen this album couple of times to really sit with me.
For me this is a very dope album. A different approach and sound than we're all used to from Conway, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. We still got few classic Griselda type of bangers/songs on this album, but as Conway said, he wanted to do it a little differently this time.
Daringer is on majority of production, with addition of J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Juicy J, JR Swift, E. Jones and others.
With lot ... read more

DJ Drama - I'm Really Like That
67

With so many projects and mixtapes, I believe this is 6th solo album from DJ Drama.
Last couple of his solo albums are not that good to me, but this one turns out good.
Contains lot of great songs with a replay value, which is dope.
Performances from the features are more consistent. As always some features have weaker verses some better,
it also depends on the listener if they prefer newer or older generation artists more.
Maybe I like features the most from: Nipsey Hussle, Jeezy, Rick Ross, ... read more

Gorilla Zoe - Don't Feed da Animals
64

2nd studio album from ATL's Gorilla Zoe for me is a mixed bag. It's not that bad, but not so good either.
Main issue for me is failed balance between trap/rap songs and autotune singing songs. Too much autotune for me and lack of lyrical supstance.
Somehow I have the feeling that he didn't know which direction to go. Maybe he did, but he didn't succeed in it.
On singles he did great job with pop rap genre and singing hooks with autotune.
MostIy he talks about hustling, money, cars and jewelry ... read more

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - E. 1999 Eternal
90

Second studio album and group's best album without a doubt.
Crazy thing is that this album sounds so good and fresh in today times, that is unbelievable.
Each member of group had their own style and delivery, and they complementing each other very well.
Their melodic rap, flows and hooks are so unique and harmonizing, they simply make for a great listening experience.
Various themes through album, such as street tales, hustling, reminiscing about past, smoking and relaxing etc.
Production is ... read more

Willy Northpole - Tha Connect
63

Debut album from Willy Northpole.
For me this is ok album, lacking diversity in terms on flow, delivery and production.
He got very slow flow so through 15 tracks his delivery get monotonous.
His lyrics and storytelling are great, mostly he talks street and gangster tales, also he shows his emotional and humorous side and he has few songs for the ladies.
Tha Bizness, Bangladesh, Jelly Roll, Nard & B are on production among others. Some beats are very hard, other are alright.
Only features ... read more

I-20 - Self Explanatory
69

Debut and unfortunately only album from rapper I-20.
Recently revisited album and his very deep voice still makes him I would say unique and recognizable.
Album is nice and solid and contains couple of bangers and it has some crunk songs, club songs and street songs. Beats, flow and rhymes are good and enjoyable, nothing to special about it, but they have their own weight.
Lyrically I'm not that impressed, but good punchlines and vibes in general.
Some of the producers are Dj Paul & Juicy ... read more

Foxy Brown - Broken Silence
74

3rd album from Foxy Brown is very good body of work.
Foxy is floating through album with her deep and rough tone of voice and sharp rhymes.
She provides hardcore gangsta music, sexy and materialistic lyrics and what I really like she also shows deep message and emotion.
Her introspective lyrics when she telling her story and life struggles, that's real stuff and I like that kind of songs.
Lot of different styles and flows on this album, and going into the elements of reggae and dancehall fits ... read more

Tha Dogg Pound - Dogg Food
75

Debut album released in the peak of Death Row Records.
Truly golden age G-Funk and West coast gangsta rap album.
Daz & Kurupt complement each other excellent with their flows and delivery, both of them spitting very hard.
Street and thug stories, sex, money and women, which means not particularly lyrical depth, but with fantastic and clever rhymes. I must mention Kurupt, who is a beast with his hard rhymes and bars.
Daz produced almost the entire album, with a little help from Dr. Dre and ... read more

Gang Starr - Moment of Truth
100

Gang Starr fifth studio album and personally my favourite. Everything about it just feels right to me.
All tracks produced by DJ Premier and Guru, simply outstanding production from boom bap to funky - jazzy production, it's perfection.
Various concepts and topics on this project, from political and social messages, to enlightening lyrics, fighting the system, struggling and hard times and inspiration.
Guru's recognizable and skillful delivery and flow fits perfectly on this ... read more

Bahamadia - Kollage
81

Debut studio album from Bahamadia belongs in a 90's gem category.
Such a underrated album, different approach with lot of soulful, jazz and r&b samples and instruments.
I think she has a style of her own where skills of a true MC is in forefront.
Lyrically phenomenal and creative, socially conscious lyrics with female empowerment and she doesn't aim for sexiness.
I read somewhere that she has kind of a monotone flow, maybe so, but she is very precise and understandable (similar to Guru from ... read more

The Lady of Rage - Necessary Roughness
77

This is only album thus far from one of the most raw female MC.
Album was not released in the golden years of Death Row Records and therefore it lacks a little bit of quality in some parts.
In any case The Lady of Rage did her thing, she shows her skills, she is spittin' bars and punchlines all over the album. You can hear her hunger and rawness, she wants to prove herself. Some lyrics through the project are a little repetitive, it feels a slight lack of creativity.
Listening to album it ... read more

JAY-Z - The Dynasty: Roc La Familia
74

5th studio album from Jay-Z, but generally it feels like a compilation album of Roc-A-Fella artists.
Beanie Sigel and Memphis Bleek are all over the album and Amil and Freeway is on few songs. Other features are Scarface, Snoop Dogg & R. Kelly.
Jay-Z carries this album in every aspect, his flows, bars and lyrical skills are in the foreground.
Album contains various different topics and styles, something for everyone. Street songs, gangsta songs, lyrically deeper songs, party and songs for ... read more

8Ball & MJG - Living Legends
83

6th studio album and first through Bad Boy label.
Considering this is their mainstream release, this album slaps very hard.
You Don't Want Drama single launched this album to their best selling one.
Countless bangers on this album with great storytelling and gritty flows with few club and radio songs as well.
Lot of energy and good vibes, showing off and just great gangsta music in general.
Their introspective lyrics I like the most.
Twista, Bun B, Ludacris, Diddy, Lloyd & T.I are some of ... read more

8Ball & MJG - Ten Toes Down
74

8th studio album from 8Ball & MJG is their Grand Hustle release.
Very good album at least for me, real gangsta music in majority of the album.
In the middle of the album we got a few club/for the ladies songs, but I like them.
Drumma Boy, Nitti, David Banner & Nard & B are some of the producers on the album.
Legendary Drumma Boy provides slow and hard bass production all over the album.
We got couple tracks with very nice soulful and country production with lot of instruments.
Lot ... read more

B.G. - Too Hood 2 Be Hollywood
83

For me this is underrated album from B.G.
This is his 11th studio album and I would say his most consistent album since departure from Cash Money. Lyrically we got a classic B.G., street tales and bangers are all over the album.
Mostly this is gangsta music, but I love a few club bangers and songs for the ladies that appear on the album. He is changing his unique flow from energetic flow through slower flow and he sounds fresh and raw with this amazing production. Lot of bass, drums, horns and ... read more
