McKinley Dixon - Magic, Alive!
95

Album Review #81
After the amazing Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!? my expectations were set in the sky and yet McKinley Dixon crushed through them, this is jazz rap greatness. While a bit less smooth than BPJ, the roughness adds so much character into an already infectiously creative project. You can feel the feeling permeate through the air as you listen. It really is magic.

Lucy Bedroque - Unmusique
87

Album Review #80
While Unmusique certainly contains Lucy's signature flair, it lacks that hard to come by "magic" that made Sisterhood and Fête de la Vanille stand out from the crowd. Still a really good project, it just feels like an overall standardization of the sound and themes. Much safer play, and to be honest looking at the features as well I wouldn't be surprised if this is the album to make Lucy blow up more than ever before.

Weiland - You Can't Climb The Mountain In N.Y.

Album Review #79
I desperately try to cling to Weiland's new ventures hoping that it will just click as much as I want it to one day, but that hasn't happened yet. It's vibey, but ultimately not for me.

Favourite Songs: Let You Go, The Girl Is Not Mine, Promise

Key Glock - Glockaveli

Album Review #78
It was designed to be auxable, and it is pretty auxable. Fun album, every song individually went hard as fuck, but it just doesn't translate to a great listening experience for a whole album.

Favourite Songs: Watch Da Throne, Sunny Dayz, 3AM in ToKEYo

MIKE - Pinball II

Album Review #77
So fucking hard. Unbelievably consistent too. Has all the benefits of a producer tape, the way each song flows into the next one is absolutely perfect. Every time I felt even a tiny bit bored the project just decided to hit me with a mind-blowing switch up. Every single feature absolutely delivered too, especially Lunchbox, who I hope gets more recognition from his contribution. Overall pure Hip-Hop

Favourite Songs: Sin City, Dolemite, Shaq & Kobe

99 Neighbors - 19
99

Single Review #14

Such a dense atmosphere and so much chemistry between everyone involved that it's hard to not be impressed. By far the best song the group dropped under the name 99 Neighbors. The haunting, dreary beat does so much work and they all know what to do with it. Simply gorgeous

Yung Lean - Jonatan

Album Review #76
Very nice project overall but just not what I'm looking for personally. I'm happy for him to show so much personal growth over the years, but at a certain point the direction he took just doesn't click as much with me as his earlier stuff. I think this album set out a goal, and achieved it, its just that that goal wasn't in line with what I had in mind, and that's fine.

Bladee - Ste the Beautiful Martyr 1st Attempt
90

Album Review #75
God I don't think it's possible for Bladee to not make an enchanting masterpiece every time he works on a project. This short and very digestible little EP is very pretty and as always the aesthetics around it are a masterclass. The music always sounds good, but what really makes Bladee one of my favourite musicians of all time is the attention to detail in theming, from project titles, to song titles, to album covers and lyrics. It's just such a tidy package of ... read more

Gorillaz - Demon Days
83

Album Review #74
Gorillaz was a fascinating project to me ever since I've first heard about its concept of a "virtual band" back when I was a kid. Took me a while to get a proper listen in, but it did not disappoint. This whole project feels like smooth talking, like it's trying to lure you into its bizarre world. It's so oddly comforting even at its most insane. Additionally, all the features give so much character and texture to the already mesmerizing charm poured in ... read more

Massive Attack - Mezzanine

Album Review #73
Goddamn this album fucks. It genuinely feels like perfect, needle on a fingertip-like balancing between this very clean, sensual elegance and layered, syrup-like UK grime. It feels heavy, sinking and viscous through the whole runtime yet its so easy to latch onto.

Favourite Songs: Risingson, Teardrop, Inertia Creeps

Portishead - Dummy
76

Album Review #72
Very cold and atmospheric, and uhhh trippy I guess? Feels kinda redundant to say that with the genre and all. Felt a bit repetitive at times. Lots of lovely ideas, but the age of it is really showing. I mean I wasn't expecting wonders from something that released in 1994, but still it was very noticeable. I'd have to be in a very specific mood to return to this project.

Favourite Songs: It Could Be Sweet, Roads, Glory Box

Ken Carson - More Chaos
87

Album Review #71
Feels less like a sequel to AGC and a huge DLC instead. I don't really mind though when the music itself is this hard. It's also interesting how it falls into this recent trend of rage music becoming less about explosive energy and more about this trance-like drilling of the sound into the brain of the listener. Production as always ridiculously on point.

Favourite Songs: Blakk Rokkstar, LiveLeak, Diamonds

MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS - ワールドイズユアーズ [World Is Yours]
80

Album Review #70
Really awesome and fun listen, I can definitely see why people like it so much. Very digestible at the 20 minute runtime. I enjoyed the way the somewhat melancholic vocal sounded with the energetic tone of the instrumentation

Favourite Songs: Aoi, Koi, Daidaiiro No Hi, She is inside, He is outside, Nan Nan

Jane Remover - Revengeseekerz
64

Album Review #69
One thing I can say for certain about this project is that it is cohesive, it creates a distinct and easily recognizable sound profile. Keyword here being profile, and what I mean by that is that I feel like I can say "Wow! This is a Revengeseekerz song!" that doesn't help stop certain tracks from feeling derivative. One example being JRJRJR, but the thing about JRJRJR is that that song is a victim of a much larger issue I don't wanna delve into right now ... read more

2hollis - star
77

Album Review #68
Before star dropped I thought that 2hollis had more of his own sound to explore, and this project is exactly that. Instead of outlandish drops and really flashy segments the project strives to create a steady pulse, reminiscent of a heartbeat. I think that's a wonderful continuation of what was established on boy. Speaking about boy, while I think I prefer the highlights of his previous effort, star shines with it's consistency.

YT - OI!

Album Review #67
Super fun and bouncy, exactly what you would expect from YT but polished to the highest degree. Loved the transitions and short cut ins, really helps to show the attention to detail on the project

Favourite Songs: Diamonds, Black & Tan, Prada or Celine

Deko - eclipse
85

Album Review #66
Deko has been trying to evolve his sound for a while now and this is his best effort yet. He shows off the strength of being the rapper, producer, and creative director of a whole project at the same time, even though Eclipse's best quality is very easily it's production since I still find Deko's rapping to be somewhat lacking compared to everything else. I hope we get to hear him produce for others in the near future. This is also probably his most coherent ... read more

Playboi Carti - MUSIC
91

Album Review #65
Carti returns to his roots in style, with a melting pot of a little bit of everything of what made him the artist he is today. The definition of music, the culmination of his body of work so far. In the end, everything, all of it, the entire past decade lead to MUSIC. It was a journey and I loved it so much. See y'all in 2030

Favourite Songs: this a special occasion so fuck it its all of em

Future - DS2 (Deluxe)

Album Review #64
An important release in Future's catalogue and an overall great trap project. Very consistent, but held back by being a bit too one note.

Favourite Songs: I Serve the Base, Stick Talk, Rich $ex

McKinley Dixon - Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?

The project first enchants you with the groove of a lifetime, before letting you soak in the story and message it's trying to tell you. A warm, glowing world of sound.

"Also I think I might have called your post as a review over the course of all my replies I am not sure at this point and I realise that is very much inaccurate 😭 Either way stay rockin or whatever they say and thanks for sharing I am ultimately very glad that there are people out there sincerely discussing my arguments makes the whole thing worth it 8/8"

"I can't infer anything about doin' fine since I am not familiar enough with her or her music. Which is unfortunate since it seems like it could have been an interesting point of discussion. Oh well. I wanna end this on a note of not meaning anything negative towards you or your friend by this reply, I love civilised music discussion. I found this by scrolling the reviews section like anyone else curious about what other people think, and just happened to recognise the points I made that were being refered to. 7/8"
On ohnoitsleon's review of Vylet Pony - Gonarch's Lair
"But it might be because the witty humour is delicately intertwined with the emotions of the track, while in comparison Vylet Pony left me with such inventive lines as "Spamming based cause they're mogged, yuh" (found in Pony Music. No matter how many layers of irony you might argue for it, it's just lame) There might be some emotion hidden in Gonarch's Lair but unfortunately earlier today as I looked for it I was not able to get through the whole thing on a re-listen. 6/8"
On ohnoitsleon's review of Vylet Pony - Gonarch's Lair
"The thing is that, the comedic one-liners and energy wouldn't even have to be sacrificed for the sake of something more interesting, introspective or generally involved to be happening here. Take as an example the song "I Choose Violence" by Glokk40Spaz. That song has what I would argue is a rather energetic and upbeat instrumental. It has solid one-liners like "I feel just like Wayan, bringin' major pain", maybe not the peak of creativity, but they are witty enough and woven in a way that feels cohesive, in a song that is I would argue overall sensitive. (2nd half especially) It makes for a song that is generally highly regarded by people who listen to it. 5/8"
On ohnoitsleon's review of Vylet Pony - Gonarch's Lair
"Unfortunately a lot of what I am about say is even more vibes based but the general flippant attitude all over the project reads to me as "I already made music people love in all those genres so something easy like trap shouldn't be an issue at all." That is where a lot of what I said about mockery comes from. Combined with the argument of a beloved artist's "low effort memes" being relegated to trap vs their most heartfelt sensitive work being literally anything else is what made me feel about the project so strongly. 4/8"
On ohnoitsleon's review of Vylet Pony - Gonarch's Lair
"Now I get that this is very much subjective but unfortunately on Gonarch's Lair I felt the rapping performance was bad enough that it would make quite literally any bar fall flat. Doesn't help the fact that everything I've heard here I've first read rehashed on twitter. But again I wanna repeat that those comedic elements aren't inherently disrespectful even when you fail your attempt at them. 3/8"
On ohnoitsleon's review of Vylet Pony - Gonarch's Lair
"Now I want to refer to the comedy segment. In a general sense I agree that comedic bars are a part of trap's identity as a genre. It's not inherently mocking to be humorous. But personally I just see it as another fail point in this case. I think that some of the most important elements of comedy (if not the most important) are delivery and creativity. Whenever I listen to a Young Thug song I can bet on the fact there will be the most ridiculous comparison ever made like a thought no one ever has had before (creativity) relayed to me in the most mind-blowing flow and ad-lib combo I've heard in my life (delivery). 2/8"
On ohnoitsleon's review of Vylet Pony - Gonarch's Lair
"hi haha, I recognized myself as the person who made the statements most of your review discusses, I wanted to say that I'm glad people are seriously considering and thinking about what I said, that's more than a lot of other people do even if we ultimately disagree. About the Demondice and Revengeseekerz comparisons, I unfortunately do not have the time to go through every Demondice song now to try and find the instances they sound similar, so I guess I have no evidence there. But with Revengeseekerz, even if you argue that YOU can't hear the similarities, (when I and most of the people I talked to did), one of the tracks is LITERALLY called VPVPVP, which is very directly referencing JRJRJR. 1/8"
