I am not a fan of the stuff on this album, with the exceptions of the two tracks 'Helena (So Long & Goodnight)' and 'I Never Told You What I Do for a Living'. Maybe I owe it another listen, but I found Gerard Way's singing melodramatic and the instrumentals to be forgettable.
Franz Ferdinand's debut feels like if a dance rock and garage rock album took performance enhancing steroids, outperforming anything close in it's field. Alternatively, it feels like it gives you stimulating drugs while listening because it really is that great. Not to mention, this thing is really accessible and disturbingly replayable, I really think it can be enjoyed in any situation.
Critics don't seem to love this one... so far after about 3 listens, I like every song, but not 100 percent crazy for a few. The strange instrumentation feels odd while fresh and still familiar. It shares a similar opinion of mine with Weezer's debut Blue album, in which the songs all feel like 'bangers', but there's more to the songs than just sounding good and ROCKIN' HARD.
This album is really fucking weird, but the sometimes subtle and sometimes in-your-face oceanic theme is really unique (and very interesting to me who has a fascination with the ocean). Every song on The Mollusk is so crazy, some funny, some melancholy, but it all works together in such an unexpected way. The Golden Eel, It's Gonna Be (Alright), The Mollusk and Mutilated Lips are my highlights for this one.
