a little samey for my taste but good god the songwriting here is top-notch and it works so well when i need this exact cozy and warm sort of sound. accidentally paying too much attention to the lyrics has nearly brought a tear to my eye and surely will succeed in doing so the more i listen.
favourite tracks: forwards beckon rebound, heavy focus, not a lot, just forever, come
biting the bullet and finally listening through the CC discography even though what was happening behind the scenes casts a dark shadow on their work. so far this is my favourite, the sound palette here works really well and a lot of the repetitiveness sounds like shit 8-year old me would've frothed at the mouth for (still kind of do with tracks like empathy, which was one of my top songs of 2023. great teeth brushing music.) beautiful and dark and annoying in a way that scratches an itch ... read more
i really wish i liked this more than i do! the video game-y bits the production is built upon are so much fun and breathe life into each song but something just didn't click here. i enjoy a lot of my favourites here way more than my favourites from cc (ii) so far but i think (ii) works better as an album
favourites: knights, tell me what to swallow, vanished, through the hoisery, black panther
they were pregnant with that wubwub style of dubstep/general early 2010s electronic here but strangely it just didn't strike a chord with me. this thing is way cooler than I am and i will maybe probably get it in a few years like I usually do with albums I feel that way about. album cover is sick and i bought a pair of cross earrings after listening to this.
favourite tracks: d.a.n.c.e, newjack, the party, let there be light
i hate this album cover and 90% of the songs sound like the exact same crystal castles rip but unfortunately it scratches a specific itch in my brain so much so that it was my most listened to album of 2024. sets an incredible backdrop for doing literally anything at night or in the cold or anything but sunny weather. listening to this on the bus going home inspires the same feeling i imagine teenage boys feel watching blade runner 2049. i can't rate this any higher because the songs i ... read more
bought a physical copy of this album and realized I actually like a lot more of the tracks on this than I thought I did. It's just short enough that the handful of tracks that don't work are easily skipped without feeling like you're missing a big chunk of the record. it certainly doesn't live up to 'around the fur' or 'white pony' but in the grander scheme of Deftones' discography i think it holds up as one of their best. hot take maybe but ... read more
ok truthfully I think I bounce back and forth on this and tidal being my favourite Fiona albums. 'when the pawn...' is just so punchy and its one of those albums where you can immediately understand why its as highly regarded as it is. also a really great 'riding public transport during fall or winter' listen. don't get me started on the lyrical content (i someday hope to come back to this once I'm better at articulating myself. then i will get started). ... read more
i used to be a 'when the pawn...' woman but I've spent the entire year listening to this after previously not understanding the hype and yeah. can safely say this is my favourite Fiona album. each song is somehow an earworm despite the album's overall mellow tone. how do you follow up 'slow like honey' with 'the first taste'... both incredible tracks with such different sounds and yet they get basically the same message across. that shouldn't work! ... read more
