Sabrina Carpenter - Short n' Sweet
80

In this year of amazing and boundary-pushing pop experiences, Short n' Sweet fits a niche as the versatile, witty, and thoughtful release from Sabrina Carpenter. Even though she takes it by the book generally, Sabrina still comes off as funny, relatable, and charming nonetheless. Although not every song reaches the heights of the singles, and overall it lacks the consistency and risk-taking from other fantastic pop records from this year like Brat and Imaginal Disk, it still is a great ... read more

Fievel Is Glauque - Rong Weicknes

Emotionally moving, sonically interesting, colorful, fun, inventive, and most of all, completely baffling. What more could you ask for in a pop record?

I first heard of Fievel Is Glauque for their song Decoy, which in 2021, the Spotify algorithm so graciously gifted my ears. Singer Ma Clément sings in French with the temperament of a blues singer over a quick, bouncing jazz beat, bookended by hypnotizing sax and guitar solos. It was a song that quickly took to my playlists, and made me ... read more

Geordie Greep - The New Sound

Greep's kaleidoscopic story-telling, breathtaking jazz fusion and Latin inspired instrumentals create an atmosphere unlike any of his previous work with black midi. Finally free with complete creative control, Greep's lyricism and ideas feel like one thing and many things at the same time. I often question if this escort figure often referenced in the lyrics is even real, or a manifestation of his batshit crazy brain. Either way, the passion and direction is unquestionably ... read more

If it wasn’t obvious after her cover of Runaway, Gezebelle is riding on a particularly creative streak at the moment. This single in particular takes the themes from Gaburger and dials the emotional intensity to the maximum. I really enjoy the screaming guitars and vocal harmonies, and the production feels like a level-up. Probably my favorite song she has released so far!

A wonderfully strange, enchanting, yet dark album from Philadelphia group Spirit of the Beehive. I really enjoyed the indie rock aesthetics mixed with the dizzying, expansive composition and production. My main issue with it currently is that sometimes the songwriting doesn't back up the expanse of ideas this band has. I think this is a great direction for them though, and I hope they continue.

Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk

To be Mica or Magdelena? That is the question....

This album is so god damned good. 2021's Mercurial World was a great release, and my introduction to the band. Compared to that, this is a complete odyssey. Unbelievably creative production makes going into this album feel like entering another world. Often this album is thought-provoking, mystical, and strange. What really tops it all though is the consistency in each track, there really are no mid tracks at all. Overall I think the ... read more
