Aggressor - Demo 1991

Gritty death doom demo for an obscure, underappreciated album. I think this would be an amazing demo if not for the vocals. The production is clear for a demo’s standards, and it mostly sounds the same as the tracks on the eventual album. Only issue is the vocalist sounds either like a drunk Arnold Schwarzenegger or a scrapped Muppet. Not pleasing to listen to. Instrumentation is wonderful though!

Essential: Legal Requirement

Slayer - Diabolus in Musica

“Diabolus in Musica” sounds like “Stomp 442” but Slayer-ified. I don’t really care for this album. Can you blame me?

Essential: Bitter Peace

Breaker - Dead Rider

“Dead Rider” overstays its welcome but the band has good energy. Easy to describe as chipper, sing-along German steel.

Essential: Born to Rock

“Then Came the Killing” has presence, but lacks power. Mezzrow have high production quality and I feel that the “sonic space” is filled by all parts of the band. Unfortunately, Mezzrow lacks an identity that differentiates each track from the other. Solos sound similar to each other due to the production and guitar tone not mixing well, creating a lack of individuality in each tracks’ mood. I feel that Mezzrow didn’t have the variation or vision that would ... read more
