Didn't completely hate it, I'm just left confused than anything by this rerecording's existence. The updated sound quality removes a lot of angst and emotion from a majority of the songs and just feels really bland. The lyric changes aren't the worst but just feel random and especially weird with the self censorship. Even though it's made by Will it sure doesn't feel like it, it undermines the whole tone of the original. Its especially apparent on Joe Drives Again, ... read more
Very pretty! Not to big on indie pop but some of the experimental electronic bits sprinkled in where very neat and defiantly spiced up the listening experience. There where a few points it was a bit too by the books indie and just sounded like Cage the Elephant but like just the bad/boring elements of Cage the Elephant. Overall enjoyed it
Also album cover is dope
Very impressive composition, Chris Wallace is absurdly talented. Only thing is it felt lacking on substance past the first song. Like I just didn't emotionally connect with it much.
WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH THE MIX?! It sounds like they hired some random ass dude off Facebook marketplace and the dude just booted up FL Studio slapped on 5 soundgooderizers and called it a day.
I love you Hikes but this just isn't it. Even ignoring the horrible mix, the structure and lyrics of the songs just come off super watered down radio friendly. Hikes is at their best off their rawness and atypical compositions both are severely lacking this project. It's missing the ... read more
Musical equivalent of getting pummeled in the chest over and over, a very pretty pummeling
Very sweet opener for the album, however I did enjoy the other single Feel more. In my opinion Hikes works the best with the rawness and edge that was especially prevalent in their earlier work. This song is a little too clean cut and leaning too pop for my preference. Still despite that the song is fun, my opinion may change with how it fits in context with the album.
Great album, Some real powerful moments on tracks like Emily, Call It Easy, and Outlast that really stick out and offer really euphoric moments. However, the vocals a lot of the time fall short of the instrumentals. When Samuel and Kaysen put more inflections and power behind the vocals its really nice, it's just sad 90% of the time they don't and it comes off kinda bored. And yes it's a tried point of criticism for this album, but I do wish they would diversify their sound away ... read more
I enjoy this song, it's nice and nostalgic. Only issue is the song feels a bit empty even at the chorus. Other than that nothing feels super dated about the song, and that's hard for an electropop song from the era.
Insane how polished this live performance is and how much it improves upon the original version. That end section made me cream my pants.
THIS NEEDS MORE ATTENTION!!!
This year has been absolutely insane for furry adjacent albums. A Lonely Sinner and Monarch of Monsters both making it to the top albums of the year. While those albums are really really good, this album is my standout and my personal album of the year. The creativity and passion that colors this album cant be left overlooked, and I'm genuinely shocked that this album isn't up there with the others. Such a unique blend, giving hints of Black Country, New ... read more
