**EDIT: 86 -> 78. This album shrunk on me upon a second listen. With the exception of "Picture You," the ballads just do not click for me. They're surprisingly generic for someone with such a distinct visual aesthetic. For me, Chappell is at her best when she's embracing that synthy, almost Kate Bush level of theatrics and melodrama. This album is WEIRD but SOAD just can't miss. "B.Y.O.B." is probably my favorite SOAD song and I know I'm not alone in that. I really appreciate the experimentation on this album, and while not every song *clicks* for me in the way SOAD often does it's by all accounts a great addition to their discography.
I've been absolutely obsessed with this album for the last month or so and can't believe it even took me that long to finally listen to it. Some of the most creative storytelling I've heard in a while. Perfect opening and conclusion, interesting and unique blending of genres, "Locals (Girls like us)" goes unreasonably hard. BRAT is one of those albums that's so good it feels difficult to even talk about. The production is glittery, sparkling, pristine. The lyrics strike a delicate balance between effortless "cool girl" energy and deeply revealing and vulnerable moments.
