Doechii - Alligator Bites Never Heal
77

Just saw Doechii's Tiny Desk and knew that I HAD to check out her latest mixtape.

The flow is there, the attitude is there, the beats are there. It's all there, and you know what, Doechii is only gonna get better!

Hadji Gaviota - gut punch!
69

Hella catchy LP with all his hits from the past year represented here. 'showtime!' and 'tricky!' are both bangers but back to back on the album? Nahhh, these needed to be separated out a bit!

I like it. BUT I would love to see something a little different from Hadji going forward, or at least mix things up a little - as this LP feels a little 'one-trick-y!' (see what I did there?). Love u Hadji

berlioz - open this wall

Thank you TikTok algorithm. Thank you.

Kendrick Lamar - GNX

yeah, Kendrick always be cooking.

Wallice - The Jester
80

Been a fan of Wallice for years, dating back to her "Hey Michael" days that still gets plenty of airtime with me.

Over the years, she has fine-tuned her style and sound, with drops of experimentation, but always relies on the catchy, bedroom pop/punk, angsty, fun, sound that I find so charming. 'The Jester' is packed full of great songs such as "The Opener", "Look at Me", "The Hardest Working Man Alive", and "Boring" to name a ... read more

Nessa Barrett - AFTERCARE
59

Nessa Barrett? Yes.
The album cover? Yes.
Some of the songs? Sure.
Most of the songs? Nah.
Longer than it needs to be? Yup.

"Wait haven't I heard this song already?"

half•alive - Persona
71

half•alive have this knack of just turning up randomly in my YouTube feed which sucks me back into their music. And this is exactly what has happened here... but I don't think I'll be sticking around for long.

I like to view albums from a perspective of how many "single" songs they have compared to "album" songs (you know what I mean). With "Persona", I feel we had already heard their "single" songs before this album release. ... read more

MICHELLE - Songs About You Specifically
77

Exactly what the doctor ordered; a vibey soundtrack to life’s messy feelings. It's got this warm, relaxed tone, but the songs go deep. For some reason, I want to play this low in the background of a group hang and just let it subconsciously enter everyone's mind...

Great work, MICHELLE. It's fun, it's catchy, it's got me Joker dancing in my bathroom.

MICO - Internet hometown hero
68

The good ol' DJ X at Spotify introduced 'glhf<3' to me, and that is how I came across MICO, and boy am I glad it did!

It's odd, 'glhf<3' felt very light and poppy to me, whereas most of this EP feels a lot more grungy and dark. I get slight Brakence vibes, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but just not what I was expecting. I'm excited to see how MICO's voice and style grows. I'll certainly be checking out his backlog in the meantime!

Tyler, The Creator - CHROMAKOPIA
80

Tyler is back (I mean did he ever go?). It's incredibly difficult to name a bad Tyler record, and "CHROMAKOPIA" is just another banger from our boy. The transitions are heavenly, the usual Tyler melodies are here and we love it, and Tyler himself is on top form.

It does however lack the deployability that "IGOR" and "Flower Boy" have. But that could change as time goes on.

'Balloon' and 'Sticky' have made it to my playlist... so far.

Sofía Valdés - Sofía Valdés
72

Oooh Sofía, your voice just does something to me. It is so, so dreamy. I love how effortless her vocals comes across and the mix of latin vibes with classic pop sounds blends perfectly across this LP.

Cudos Sofía, cudos.

Charli xcx - Brat and it's completely different but also still brat
77

What a feat it is to extend brat summer into the colder times of October! I mean, it's brat so it's a vibe.

Focusing solely on the remixed songs here, these are the ones that improve on the original version: '360' (although would have loved the original chorus thrown in somewhere), 'Von dutch', 'Everything is romantic', 'Girl, so confusing', 'Mean girls', and 'Guess'. So a fairly even split between this and the original. ... read more

Tommy Richman - COYOTE
68

It's funny, I had both high and low expectations for this album and it met both? Like, Tommy's recent releases have all slapped, but like many modern albums, they are usually just those releases littered with filler, and that is what some of this feels like, but at the same time, you kind of know what you get here with Mr Richman, and what you get is vibes.

I'll be keeping this one in my library and bump to it now and then. Looking forward to see how he develops his style.

Wallows - Nothing Happens
77

I think Wallows have crafted a pretty timeless sound with their debut LP, here. They've done a pretty stellar job in spacing out their best songs - that being track 2, 4, 5, 9, and the other surrounding them still being very good songs; albeit a little less memorable.

The moody, but also hella poppy, Indie sound that they've carved out with "Nothing Happens" is infectious, even to those outside the genre. Even my wife, who is by no means a fan, has sung along to a handful ... read more

Why's it call 143?

It's 2024, pop has evolved and changed so much in the last 15 years. This album proves that having abs alone doesn't make you a pop star in today's world. Katy Perry's music hasn't evolved in slightest - in fact, it may have devolved. Incredibly lazy production, really slow beats just sound and feel amateur, it just ain't it at all. Sorry b.

I do like kind of like parts of 'GORGEOUS' and Doechii's parts of 'I'M ... read more

JOBA - Russell Boring
51

I feel like he was going for an old school, piano rock vibe that may, and I say this loosely, have killed it in any other decade; but instead, it sounds like I've found an old LP in my dad's attic, and skipped through the tracks as they've aged like milk and are pretty boring.

Best songs are the opener, and closer. 'People Need the People' too, but everything else is easily skippable.

Sorry Joba, I'm happy you're now making the music you want, it's ... read more

/AOTY Randomiser/

Wife walked in and said, "What is this shit?" while I was body rolling and snapping my fingers while eating some vintage cheddar boule and sipping on a Coke Zero.

I felt like I was listening to the interludes between a really cool cop drama from the 70s, and was trying to imagine what the storyline was with each song. It was a vibe in the moment, but nothing I'd return to.

Mac DeMarco - Salad Days
81

Man, I remember when Mac DeMarco was in every 'cool' girls' heart - those were the (Salad) Days...

I've heard a bunch of Mac here and there, and always enjoyed what he has created, and after listening to "Salad Days", I can confirm that I am in fact a 'cool' girl, and Mac has my heart. 'Chamber of Reflection' I think will always be the stand out here, but, to me, what makes an album special is when you can hit play from track one and just not ... read more

Rex Orange County - The Alexander Technique
73

SIXTEEN SONGS... our boy Alex is back.

I'mma cut to the chase on this one. Man could have easily dropped 4 of these songs and make the whole project a little tighter; however, I appreciate and understand the method and story here. That said, there was a lull for me early on this in album and that worried me. He did, though, pull me back in from 'The Table' onwards (mostly). A new-ish direction for Rex Orange County, stripping back the production to allow for the stories shared ... read more

Camila Cabello - C,XOXO (Magic City Edition)
68

Still obviously have to score this as a whole project; but all focus will be on the four new tracks. See my other review for thoughts on the original "C,XOXO".

'baby pink' is catchy - I actually really like this one. The pitched up vocals were cool and I was bopping along throughout. 'Come Show Me' is fine, no real comments here - skippable. 'can we kiss?' why yes we can. Camila–uh, I mean... I really enjoyed this one, her vocals are strong here ... read more
