Actually like really good. Idc if it’s a guilty pleasure song lowkey hypes me up
Fuck there’s no album quite like this one, and I won’t bother defending it or myself, I just wanna talk. This album grew on me hard, and I am rewriting this review because my original re-review was erased 3/4 of the way through when mobile AOTY decided to randomly refresh.
I’m sad a lot, and I’m awkward a lot, and I lust a lot and I love a little less but I wish I could love more people. I’m more than just confused a lot of the time, and I have to live with it. ... read more
ALRIGHTY IVE FINISHED THE ALBUM YIPPEE KI-YAY WHAT A RIDE. Too early to have final thoughts but first impressions:
Peggy needs to switch his flow up more! Sounds so good when he does it idk why he stuck to 3 flows throughout most of this album. The production on these songs are INSANE. I love it so much, really. Maybe on the verge of a techno awakening in my music taste.
To me, this is about as memorable and entertaining as almost every other Jpeg project (Hot take probably) except for ... read more
God I’m soo excited and I love the idea behind the song but the production feels flat at parts, and just felt sort of empty as well, but not in a stylistic way like wwaly. The style that it DOES carry is very nice though.
Like daft punk, if you look past the gimmicks, then all you get it a fun time. And what I mean by that is that this is the type of music I'll listen to, say "Hm, neat" and probably just move on. Not bad but definitely overhyped.
I'm sorry if this review just sounds like me rambling I'm just doing a train of though review
"What makes this different from other sample based albums?" you might ask. Well, this album is probably the closest thing humanity will truly get to reaching a flawless album. It runs 18 tracks but doesn't get boring or repetitive. It has a chaotic atmosphere but is still so beautiful. It's complex and intricate, and yet so cohesive. I'll admit it took at least 4 ... read more
Inexplicable hatred towards this entire song. Something about it triggers whatever sensors in my brain feel dread and discomfort. eughh
When I saw this album 2 years ago on a top 100 albums quiz before I got deep into music and really only listened to hip-hop, I saw the name DJ Shadow and thought "What a lame name. How is this in the top 100?" Up to that point the only thing I thought of when I heard the term "DJ" was some guy spinning discs on a turntable making cheesy electronic music. And I can guarantee that if I had listened to this album at the time I would have hated it. But as time went on and I got ... read more
Damn I forgot how good this was. Every track on this hits. I especially like Freeee and Kids See Ghosts which seem to actually be the least popular tracks on the album but those made me float. Really is a shame to see how Kanye went off the rails a few years after this.
I can't lie I honestly prefer drakes last verse to J. Coles. Goes unbelievably hard and also his delivery is so good
I’ve gotta say R.I.P Paulie before this review.
This album is standard, I think that’s the best way to describe it. It’s a vibe but a lot of the songs don’t innovate on really anything. Even middy titty just sort of copy pasted drums from chamber of reflection, and that’s probably the standout of the album! I wish this album did more with it’s sound instead of being half between a truly great and unique album that does something new with it’s sound, ... read more
The extra samples def add a special atmosphere that despite the original being practically perfect, it couldn’t quite capture. Radio intro and Diners Only champagne dialogue really add some extra flare to those songs. Also With my Baby is such a great addition, sucks they scrapped it for the full release
Has daydream and then sort of peters out. I think it just lacks high points past daydream, making most of it good but forgettable I think it's a great start to George Clanton and ESPRIT but the actual album just leaves you wanting more of the strong start and never gives it to you. Also this cover has to be one of my favorites of all time lmao.
The vocals are pretty monotonous but the instrumentation is something unique. It invokes this sense of longing for a moment that can't happen. It's very eerie at times, and honestly pretty experimental at parts by the standards of it's time. The album cover matches the songs pretty well. They're cold and lonely but there's a comfort in them. I would recommend it to anyone who's interested in checking it out, but it's not like my recommendation would do much to ... read more
“Yeah alright, the mix is good enough”
Similar to the wifiskeleton album I reviewed, this album’s main issue is the mixing. It’s like they had a random number generator from -10db to 10db and just pressed that for the tracks. Other than that, this album is pretty decent. I’m not a huge fan of the extremely chaotic sound, but I could get behind some of the melodies. It’s a decent debut from an album I’m not familiar with much at all. I’ll look ... read more
A truly spectacular plunderphonics record.
Dreamcast Summer Songs is the first project of Devon Hendryx (Now JPEGMAFIA), and also is one of the most early (speculatively THE most early) vaporwave project. With this album you get a mix of high energy sample flips, eerie and hazy soundscapes, and also proto-future funk. Track 1 Power Stone opens with a Marvin Gaye sample chop, and a groovy beat that persists throughout the song. It sort of takes an odd shift to piano, and then horns, and finally ... read more
I mean it's alright, there are some amazing and incredible songs on here (see Call me) but a lot of the songs aren't given enough of a chance to shine by themselves by ending too quickly, and others go on too long. This album is definitely one of the better lofi projects I've listened to, but if it was cut down to maybe 3/5 of the current tracklist, I would probably enjoy it more
A pretty standard lofi tape. Doesn't have much new to offer, but the dusty and crunchy sounds are very nice on the ears
