I will confess, I had to turn this off half way through. I was enjoying the instrumentals a lot, but her vocals were god awful. Then she started rapping, which is where I decided that was crossing the line a bit. Then, I found out that she's not a very good person and... yeah it's safe to say I unfortunately will not be checking out more of her stuff even if I trusted the person who recommended her to me.
Some really great, fun heavy psych rock with great playing from all the musicians. The only problem is the album as a whole doesn't have much unique or cool or interesting about it, but putting this on you just know you're getting a solid album, which a lot of albums are not! The atmosphere is great and it was a fun experience overall,
In my opinion, this is undoubtedly the most underrated Boris album, even underrated by myself who didn't get it at first. Essentially these are just better versions of songs from LOVE & EVOL, with Merzbow adding to the texture with some really surprisingly pleasant noise with interesting progression and development, although it gains more control on later, more intense tracks, which makes for an interesting album experience although some of the mixing could be better, and it makes it ... read more
I found this super interesting and cool, obviously very depressing as everyone else notes, but I do wish the album had better progression in general. My favourite song by far, Apistat Commander, is a great example of how perfect the album *could* be for me, as it actually features some really nice sonic progression that maybe should go on a little bit longer. The problem with other songs for me is that they seem to be be building up to some emotional climax that doesn't occur in most ... read more
Wow, what a great experience this was. May be a little biased, but I listened to this whilst walking around in the UK heat and sunshine, going from residential areas and slowly strolling off the beaten path where every step was less and less path-like, until I found myself in a big field. And no, I was not on any drugs but the remaining caffeine in my system, which is a testament to how great this is at encapsulating a psychedelic experience. Honestly, every second was hypnotic, twisting, and ... read more
The second disc of this album is some of the most underrated 2010s Swans stuff: A Piece of the Sky has one of the most somber and depressed vocal performances by Gira as he talks about his search for faith, Song for a Warrior is one of the band's sweetest and most heartfelt songs and it moves me to tears, Avatar is just plain awesome and Apostate has a great build up with another really interesting exploration of religious themes. The first disc is pretty good too, but for me it gets ... read more
Cool and intense as hell, but some of the vocals were a bit dodgy.
Wow so this one probably won't be getting a rating for a while, it needs time to sit and stuff because even as an experimental music lover and recently someone who occasionally listens to Merzbow before bed (don't ask), this was WEIRD AS HELL! It's great and I loved it, but what the hell is going on? I have previously listened to The Lamb As Effigy but I was rather distracted as it was in a really unpleasant time in my life and I wasn't quite into post-rock like I am now at ... read more
A collection of fun, interesting prog rock jams with pretty solid production.
I've been following this band for about a year now after seeing them live supporting another band I like, and I've been enjoying the singles as they've released. The production on here is pretty solid, if a little same-y, but it showcases the interesting guitar work, which for me was the main focus since seeing them live. The drums are also really solid and interesting, but I think the main issue with ... read more
Wow, this is a lot better than I remember and it's a lot more interesting to me than the album. I love the guitar and drum rhythms, and Picton's vocal performance is interesting and fitting.
I'm really not sure how to feel about this. It's interesting and I love Picton's work with Black Midi but this album just feels like it keeps having the potential to be good and then missing it. Folk isn't really something I've ever got into but I have had a few albums with folk influence that I've enjoyed recently but the vibe here isn't the same and I'm not sure Picton's voice works here for me as well. I will definitely come back since there are ... read more
"It's Swans if it was made by a My Little Pony fan type furry that is equally as insane, traumatised, and eccentric as Michael Gira but with Glass Beach levels of genre bending"
I had not even got half way through this when I started writing this because I am so amazed. Like others, I did worry the furry elements of this album would make me struggle to take it as seriously, but honestly, if anything, I am gaining a newfound appreciation and understanding of furry themes that not ... read more
I found this really disappointing: the build-ups were dull, the drones weren't interesting, the riffs were underdeveloped and uninteresting, and the runtime was wholly unjustified, especially in the individual longer tracks like track 8, which was too boring for me as a drone fan. There were more interesting tracks like Terrible Bear Attack and Je M'appelle was interesting despite being an interlude, but overall I think atmospheric sludge metal is hugely overrated on these corners of ... read more
Rating: 81 -> 90
When I first listened to this, I didn't really know what I was getting into, but after having seen covers of the songs and let it settle in, holy hell this is good. It's chaos in its purest form, whilst featuring insanely talented drumming and guitar work from two musicians that I swear must share one consciousness because how ln earth they can play all this together is beyond me. The progression and development in songs is just the right amount to keep it ... read more
This album is obviously pretty experimental and very different to most of the music in my regular rotation so I did spend a while listening to individual tracks from this before trying the full album, and it was definitely a good idea although those songs (Get Got, I've Seen Footage, and Hacker) are definitely by far my favourites. I also made sure to read through the lyrics as they're always more important in hip-hop and I did quite like them for the most part, they are very complex ... read more
Okay, okay, after a full album, I get the vibe more than I did for the singles. It's definitely an interesting listen, and I can see myself potentially come back to this if I was in the right mood, although I'm more likely to pick LP1 or other post-Midwest emo rock like The Newfound Interest in Connecticut, mainly because those are more consistent (and have much better vocals, sorry...). Man Overboard was a really good opener although following up with No Feeling felt like a bit of a ... read more
It really confuses me why people shit on Slipknot, but then give their corniest song ever a 90??? "Oh, I'll never kill myself to save my soul / I was gone, but how was I to know?" accompanied by choral vocals is probably the worst depiction of depression I've ever heard. The Solway Firth and Nero Forte are no better than other Slipknot songs and they stand out to me less, and the rest is just filler in my opinion. The user score for this doesn't exactly call it amazing, ... read more
This album takes the stupid, dumb, but fun riffs of Count Your Blessings and adds in better vocals, some good electronic bits and some really cool production and makes for a great album. Overall, not the best album ever, but a really solid metalcore effort with some great and enjoyable tracks.
This is meant to be interesting, unsettling, and thought provoking, and it is pretty good at being all these things, although sometimes I wish certain ideas/sections were emphasized more than others. However, one thing that isn't involved with those three adjectives is enjoyment: overall, compared to other drone music I don't really find as much entertainment in this. There are some undeniably cool parts where the guitar tones and chords are powerful enough to make my chest and ... read more
A great album overall, but not as good as Ænima.
Yeah, I said it. It's not that huge a difference in ratings on here, but like, Lateralus is THE Tool album that always gets brought up. I think its main issue for me is that it feels way more pretentious and full of even more random filler interludes and repetition of the same musical ideas, yes I know I like Swans so I can't say much on that, but like, why do the last songs have to be so long? Why does Ticks & Leeches need ... read more
