One of the best post-punk concept albums in recent times, I Did It All For You explores fascination, desire, love and obsession, and its lunatic speaker only lets loose his secret until the final, rollicking song. The most entertaining album of 2018, released just as the year came to a close.
Polvo's masterpiece EP, a short and rattling collection of violent, scratchy proto-math rock with an exotic tinge.
Elvrum creates an album that transcends mere music, trespassing onto the emotional canvass of a modern poet. The agony of his dire emotions, the care and love for his child and the bleak hope for the future creates a dramatic landscape almost equal to the endeavours of Kozelek and Cohen. Phil once again manages to create a personal collection of snippets from his life that draw listeners in like moths to a flame.
Relatives in Descent has dragged Post-Punk, kicking and screaming, into relevancy once again. With the exploits of Women, Algiers, The (returned) Pop Group and (seemingly undying) Pere Ubu littering the modern era with excellent albums from the seemingly dwindling genre, I was already given high hopes for this album and the other Post-Punk releases of this year.
And, as uncommon as it is, I did not receive the jolt of disappointment that usually meets positive anticipation.
