Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes

There are three main artists I credit my dad for getting me into. The Smiths, The Dead Kennedys and The Violent Femmes. Each of these artists are great in their own right, but the Femmes might actually be my favorite of the three, and their debut is probably my favorite album of the 80s. The project starts out with the Violent Femme's biggest hit, Blister in the Sun. This song captures the core ethos of this project beautifully. It's energetic, jittery and very horny. I think the song ... read more

LCD Soundsystem are a psy-op designed to make me think Daft Punk are cool.

The 100 Album Challenge: Album #52
There's some fun stuff on here, but it gets boring by the end. This album helped me appreciate the other Smiths members besides Morrissey. Johnny Marr has some nice riffs, Mike Joyce serves the song well, and I'm actually really into Andy O'Rourkes bass work. I definitely prefer Queen is Dead though, and I was missing a lot of that album's wit here.

I think the production on Melt My Eyez is better than the production here, but I think his flows are definitely stronger here. He does fast rap the right way for sure. He maintains the excitement of a high tempo while keeping the diction of a slower flow. He uses it in really creative ways too. The way he builds tension in the first verse of SIRENS is masterful shit. He also has tons of great bars and hooks. My only issue with the album is that some of the songs are to hook ... read more

The album title lied and now I'm writing this with a braille keyboard.
Relistens: Album #2
This is just a great rap album. The production is super lush and pretty at times. It's not something I'm generally expect from a hip-hop album, but it's always nice to be reminded of how beautiful this genre can be. I could almost see a track like Mental working on an Avalanches album. The album can still definitely go hard though. The three-song run of The Smell of Death, Sanjuro and ... read more

The 100 Album Challenge: Album #51
Car Seat Headrest are a weird band to me. On one hand, I don't find them interesting sonically. They have their moments for sure, and I even love a couple songs on Twin Fantasy, but overall, I think they're just alright indie rock sonically. On the other hand, Will Toledo is the greatest lyricist to ever live. That's a minor overexaggeration, but he's at a level to me only inhabited by people like Phil Elverum and my literal favorite ... read more
