Gojira - The Way of All Flesh
The Way of All Flesh is a full psychological arc. Its heavy, philosophical, and a complete breakdown and reconstruction of a worldview. The album starts apathetic, overwhelmed, even passive. By the midpoint it mutates into anger, resolve, and violence. And in the end, it zooms out so far that the self just dissolves. The whole thing feels like a fight inside one person’s head, but also like the earth itself trying to speak through them. Gojira always write ... read more
i love the shift toward acoustic and folk-forward songwriting, and want to rate this higher. The record is more reflective and less explosive, but the band pulls it off well. A debut built on blues, early hard rock, and a surprising-ish amount of acoustic work. The highs come when the band mixes heavy sections with softer folk ideas, especially on Babe I’m Gonna Leave You and How Many More Times. Some of the straight blues tracks drag lyrically, but the chemistry is already obvious. Bonham and JPJ carry weaker moments, and Page’s ideas are strong even when the execution isn’t fully formed.
A blend of every side of the band from heavy rock, folk, acoustic ballads, and long-form writing. Stairway to Heaven is the centerpiece for a reason, but tracks like Going to California and When the Levee Breaks show the range they had at this point. the peaks define the album. Strong variety, strong execution, and the sound of a band in full control.
A stylistically broad record. funk, reggae influence, soft rock, and some of their cleanest acoustic writing. No Quarter is an obvious standout and one of their most complete songs. The rest of the album mixes strong ideas with a few lighter, less essential tracks. Not perfect, but creative and consistently interesting. My favorite Zep album
