米津玄師 [Kenshi Yonezu] - IRIS OUT

I know I'm completely alone on this but I got major Hazbin Hotel or Bendy the Ink Machine vibes from this song and for that reason I can't get into it. A shame, because I'm a Chainsaw Man fan, and loved all the openings and endings from the first season.

ok more serious review this time

i find this song a banger tbh but its not what i wanted to talk about. The thing for me the most is something that really annoys me with reviews in this website on songs made by women. the way some of y'all are so comfortable calling her names just for disliking her music is actually disgusting, and doing that in the same sentence that you're calling her "edgy" and saying she's not "all of that" makes you look even more ... read more

Ado - 永遠のあくる日 [Eien No Akuruhi]

tenihowa every year or so casually dropping a 3/4 ballad tearjerker is always nice to see

Ado - 初夏 [Shoka]

probably would get flamed for this but better early sheena ringo sounding music than missing, which is actually produced by sheena

The Living Tombstone - My Ordinary Life

somehow the most overrated and overhated TLT song

The Living Tombstone - Temporary Love

Nothing too special, but really shows the potential CG5 has, but doesn't really shine because what gives him success is tiktok ragebait songs that he makes in 5 minutes on a livestream.

The Living Tombstone - It's Been So Long

unironically of the best songs in 2014 and maybe the best to come out of fandom culture

Jax Jones - Stay Gold (from BEYBLADE X)

this may be awful but, I'll give Jax Jones one thing, at least this is the best song I've heard from him. Horrible use of Ado? Sure, but it's something I guess.

Yaelokre - Harpy Hare

stop having fun

Alphaville - Big in Japan

One of the best songs ever made, along with Gira Gira and Ocean Man.

Creepy Nuts - Mirage

0 solely for the AI cover. I don't care. They've won MAJs. They're also basically the biggest japanese artist right now, at least in the west. Bling-Bang-Bang-Born and Otonoke dominated everything last year. And they still used AI for a cover art??

The Buttress - Brutus

the fucking beat tho, omg

"Their new EP is at 77, and it's obviously gonna go down, but it'll probably be in yellow, so your prediction remains true for now not an AJR fan but it always amused me the idea of previously hated artists suddenly dropping something everyone agrees is legendary"
On AffyMoon's review of Ado - 狂言 [Kyōgen]
"@triplej Yes, but in more traditional and modern J-pop? I can only think of either older albums (like some from Shinsei Kamattechan, some from Sheena Ringo, some from Utada Hikaru), and "nicher" artists like Maretu and Kikuo (Sasuke Haraguchi has nice reviews but as far I remember they were few). There are probably others too, but then again, smaller artists, and if not straight up not japanese (like some songs from the Evangelion OST) or with a more americanized sound (Lotus Juice, who's obviously japanese, but people seem to think he's american which I think that says something). (and I love lotus juice btw)"
On AffyMoon's review of Ado - 狂言 [Kyōgen]
"Or, of course, ranting about how all the producers that Ado work with are horrible, then rating some of the producers' albums as "one of the best albums of all time". Or claiming she can't sing when every vocal coach I've seen, including some IRL, told me the complete opposite. But seriosuly, all that aside, it all just annoys me a lot, but I guess at the end of the day these music rating websites will always be shit when it comes to japanese music. I mean, B'z isn't even on this website, so I guess why should I trust what it has to say about japanese music... (or how most of the highest rated japan-related music are by western artists singing in english, but thats another tangent)"
On AffyMoon's review of Ado - 狂言 [Kyōgen]
"Explaining my racism and misogyny claim here better, I feel like it cannot be a coincidence that even the highest rated modern Japanese artist on AOTY, Fujiii Kaze, still have lower scores than Taylor Swift. And of course, accusing young women of having giant egos for just doing her thing, having done absolutely nothing wrong and being considerest worse than Kanye West (???), not to mention literally google translating lyrics and complaining that they aren't good, going on a rant about how "japanese music just can never be normal", or calling her insults and simultenously insulting the entire landscape of Vocaloid and Utaite music."
On AffyMoon's review of Ado - 狂言 [Kyōgen]
"thank you for calling it what it is, lmao. Even as an Ado fan, there are many valid criticisms to be made of Ado, but people here resort to veiled misogyny and racism instead."

"@Shino12 I don't think so, considering this wouldn't be their first use of AI. They also used AI for the doppelganger visualizer. I like their music otherwise but AI shit is a complete turn off for me."
On NewWonder's review of Jax Jones - Stay Gold (from BEYBLADE X)
"most of her fans don't really care either. I've seen comments that in the Hibana tour she isn't "going all out enough" (AKA she isnt growling in ballad songs, what a tragedy, I know), and how "she needs to do a bigger concert next year, I didn't see her!" (she's already doing the biggest world tour ever for a japanese artist, like, let her take a BREAK), or how her fans complain when she doesnt scream enough. the only thing that makes me somewhat optimistic for change is that, for probably the first time ever since like April 2020, no song of hers is anywhere in spotify charts japan, which is something I think Universal would care about and maybe thus want to change things, but the way her popularity has grown overseas makes me doubt that."
On NewWonder's review of Jax Jones - Stay Gold (from BEYBLADE X)
"And I apologize for the multiple comments. It's a bit disappointing that a "music discussion website" has a character limit that makes me think "Twitter", but it is what it is. And sorry if I came across as agressive in any comment, my english is really bad, I'm not native, and it wasn't my intention. Oh, and just so my comments aren't just meaningless words, I want to prove some stuff I said: The claim she wants to do more songwriting and stuff comes from her Q&A, the "tie-in" claim is that even the song from her that you really enjoy, Value, is a tie-in for Apple, and the reason I say I don't see this changing is that, why would it? It's not what her label seems to want, otherwise they wouldn't overwork her like this, and (1/2)"
On NewWonder's review of Jax Jones - Stay Gold (from BEYBLADE X)
"as if she's a vocaloid with a realistic voice, not even a *human*. I wish she'd take a break and be free from label stuff. Her literal childhood idol is Sheena Ringo, and nowadays they seem to be friends. And not only Sheena Ringo, but Akina Nakamori and Kikuo as well. Akina even publicly gifted her a flower stand in the start of the Hibana tour. She's friends with some of the most legendary figures of Japanese Music, and I just wish she'd explore her sound more freely. I'm sure they'd be a very good helping hand in her journey if she were to do that. But sadly, I recognize that's just a pipe dream."
On NewWonder's review of Jax Jones - Stay Gold (from BEYBLADE X)
"Maybe you disagree with me, and that's fine too, but I think she's genuinely very talented at what she is, a vocalist, her belting is insane, her stamina as well, and she clearly *cares* about music, on every song she tries something to make it her own, even in that bad Take Me To The Beach collab, she sounds very unique there compared to her other songs and she has a dynamic with Dan Reynold on that song that I probably wouldn't even know that his lines were already recorded more than a year prior to it. And she does it all just with intuition. I say all of that to say that she just lacks direction and creative freedom. She seems to be stuck in some production pipeline where she just records voices for whatever tie-in Universal wants (1/2"
On NewWonder's review of Jax Jones - Stay Gold (from BEYBLADE X)
"And the reason I care about this at all is because her music has genuinely helped me a lot. I've connected to it so much, and she has helped me through many times. I know you really dislike her, and that's ok too, but I guess music is art in the end, it's always perspective. I just wish she was allowed to try anything at all. She's young, but I don't see anything changing in the future. She isn't this way now because that's what her label wants, no, she's this way sonically because she's always been this way, since her days as an utaite, she just hasn't had an opportunity to grow and mature."
On NewWonder's review of Jax Jones - Stay Gold (from BEYBLADE X)
"And to continue speaking here because I think the other comment hit some character limit, I kind of wish Ado would just go off her label. Something that is kind of obscure is that she's actually said that she WANTS to make more of her own stuff, she wants to compose more, she wants to write more, and she jut doesn't have the time to do so. That makes me even more pessimistic, and is probably why it feels so soulless. She sings well, sure, but she has to put out 1000 songs all the time because of her label. It's always a different tie-in, and those have a schedule that she has to obey to. She *can't* mature her sound when she has 99 songs to do, and 34 more shows to perform back to back."
On NewWonder's review of Jax Jones - Stay Gold (from BEYBLADE X)
"As someone who loves Ado, differently from the rest of this website, I honestly agree. I was already expecting the worst when this song was announced, but it's honestly somehow worse. I wanted to confirm that I wasn't crazy, so back then I basically forced myself to go through his discography, and honestly, although this is the best song I've heard from him, this song is so bad. Worst Ado song for me by far. It's as generic as it can be, and the way other fans eat this up is insane. I'm currently pretty pessimistic about her future songs, as someone who really enjoys her other stuff, because these latest singles are just so bad. There's always some problem. It's actually almost funny."
On Shortbuskid's review of Ado - ゲゲゲの鬼太郎 [GeGeGe no Kitaro]
"I now feel the need to justify this because I actually kind of enjoy the GeGeGe no Kitaro anime now: This song is actually a cover. She is singing the opening of "GeGeGe no Kitaro" for a special broadcast in Japan of some special episodes. You can search on YouTube, and all the openings of this anime are covers of each other, same composition and all, starting from back in 1968. It's pretty classic. I agree it's really nothing special, but I think it's a somewhat fun enough song for just an opening of a kid's show, so I give it maybe a 60 instead."
On reiieva's review of Ado - ゲゲゲの鬼太郎 [GeGeGe no Kitaro]
"She sang the opening of "GeGeGe no Kitaro" for a program that broadcasted episodes or something like that. This is just a cover of that classic opening, you can find all the old versions on YouTube. I agree it's not some great song, but it became fine to be when i learned it's just a silly song for a kid's show that is kinda goofy but also kind of horror, not really a very serious song."

"@fxrmaline any reason to dogpile on a random japanese artist lol"
On bmiller201's review of Ado - 残夢 [Zanmu]
"Eh, it's a complicated subject. While I do agree with you and would like to hear a proper Ado album some day, apparently the constant change in producers is a deliberate choice, as she is an utaite, and prefers to sing and release songs in completly different styles from producers she is a fan of, so that aspect of her music may never change. That way, Ado's albums are less of albums and more collections of singles, and tbh, viewing it as not an album made me appreaciate it more since, as an album, its really not good, but as almost a "playlist" of sorts, it's quite nice."

"That's a common thing I see from Ado. Idk why such a big musician doesn't have better instruments, on some songs it sounds particularly bad, specially when her live band is so great (I even follow the guitarrist on twitter lol)"
On Ado - unravel
"I know right? I said I'd give this an 80, but that's looking at it more critically, because it's almost a bit hard to listen to after hearing the live version. It's just so, so good, not just her voice, but the instruments also, the guitar solo was crazy, all the other band members also did very well."
On Gav's review of Ado - ルル [RuLe]
"Im so late to this, but yeah, you really said what I was thinking, thank you. Some reviews quite frustrated me lol, some are just weird. Can I also rant for a second? Some comments I've been also borderline hints on conspiracy theory about her as a person, others blunt misunderstanding of what lyrics are trying to convey, and others just plain empty comments without argumentation."
On LoverofBowie's review of Ado - 狂言 [Kyōgen]
"I dont think she can be called underrated, not in her niche at least (jpop), but people here do seem to hate her more than i could understand lol"
