MIKE, the New Jersey Born, New York raised rapper, has been on a tear.
In the past 3 years, he has released 6 projects, all of them part of the steady artistic journey that he has been on since his breakthrough project, "MAY GOD BLESS YOUR HUSTLE". His most recent "Showbiz!", serves as a spiritual successor to his 2021 release, "Disco!", and it's a true achievement.
Showbiz is like all of MIKE's music, measured, layered, and deeply personal. Ever ... read more
Smi.. I'm a bit disappointed. Only a bit.
Smino has been one of my favorite rappers and artists overall for a while now, so when I heard he was dropping a new project, I was excited. When I heard Dear Fren come on, I thought I was in for a treat. And for some songs I was. Smino still flows and sings over complex rythms and trippy melodies, but some of that finesse Is missing here.
Ready Set Goku is maybe the best rapping performance on the album, Kenny Beats knows how to bring the best ... read more
Freddie Gibbs is one of my favorite rappers of the modern era, and all time. He can't put out a bad project. That being said, much of the production on this record leaves more to be desired, and the instrumentals subdue Freddie's fervor. Freddie is still rapping at the top of his game, that never seems to change. It's hazy, it's a vibe. I don't have a ton to say. It feels like a bridge to a better project.
Favorites: Cosmo freestyle, wolverine, 30 girlfriends, steel ... read more
What can I say that hasn't already been said. Groovy west coast beats, unique Kendrick Flows, memorable features, a few introspective cuts, what more could you ask for from this album.
Wacced out murals is a proclamation, a new phase for Kendrick. The beef is over, he finished Drake and now he wants the culture to follow him, wherever that may be. For this album, that destination is the dance floor. Squabble up is exactly what it needs to be, an extremely fun track with some great ... read more
A daring, wild ride inside the mind of Geordie Greep. Frenetic, paranoid vocals throughout, it starts off with the glorified finger exercise that is Blues, and I absolutely love it. The three track run of Terra, Holy Holy (the lyrical highlight of the album), and The New Sound, is one of the best I've heard all year. Drunken, misanthropic, and entirely egotistical, the characters in this album are entirely unique, entirely Greep, but also recognizable in their own right. At the same time, ... read more
Mach-Hommy proves yet again that he is one of the best in the game right now. With production from the likes of Conductor Williams, kaytranada, quelle chris and many more. A more accessible record that doesn’t comprimise character or message, he’s never bashful or shy, he shows true confidence that is a breath of fresh air. He sticks to his guns with lyrical prowess that is mostly unmatched. The griselda cuts are great. Amazing album, front to back.
Chief Keef is back in his best form, on the drill beats we know and love, giving us braggadocious, rambunctious bars. What more could I ask for.
Kim Gordon is cooler than you and your grandma. What a strange and engrossing soundscape. I’m intrigued listening to this. My only complaint is that the writing feels rather incomplete in places, and I would’ve liked some more variety. While great, it does end up getting stale sometimes. I’m thoroughly impressed though.
Damn. The wait is over and it was worth it. On one of the most impressive displays of versatility I’ve seen in quite a while, Schoolboy Q shows us that he can and will step out of his comfort zone. Like on the guitar driven “Pop” (with an excellent Rico Nasty verse) and the 808 filled “Yeern 101”. Don’t get it twisted though, there’s no shortage of his Boom Bap virtuosity that I’d been missing, it’s all over the project and fresh as ever. ... read more
I’m loving a more fully realized version of his sound here.
Funky and full of fun grooves as always. The pure musicality of this project is enough to carry it far, but when the synths hit, it becomes something special.
Bladee is back and in rare form. This feels like a culmination of the darker sound that he’s been neglecting for a little while now. The glitchy WOD rage beats compliment the hazy lyrics and almost blurted flows. I continue to return to this project. Great features from all the drainers too. He did it again.
While this sound is perhaps not fully developed, Simz gives us a worthwhile project full of fun songs with the glitchy EDM sound carrying. I can’t complain. Mood Swings is a bop.
Sweet and sometimes sultry, PinkPantheress delivers yet again. A celebration of Y2Kisms and aesthetics, and the UKG and dnb influence is definitely there as well. Fun listen.
A short but sweet attempt from Bladee and Yung Lean. I love the more rock forward production with that dreamy cloudy production in there as well. While I believe the tracklist falls off a bit towards the second half, overall this is a more then welcome addition to the drainer catalogue.
also, Cute frog.
This feels like a moment. I don't know where we're going but it's somewhere new. A lesson in sonic world building. Things get weird and industrial, trancy and synthy on this record. Great production all around especially from the likes of Synthetic and BNYX. It's certainly a little misguided and/or corny at points, but sometimes it comes with the territory. All in all, A massive step up for Yeat on this one.
They deliver yet again. Filled with beautiful ambient, funky, jazzy and weird post rock instrumentation, this album is sonically beautiful. It’s not lacking on the lyrical side either, Thom as always brings thought provoking lyrics with an anti establishment edge. Here’s to even more improvement from The Smile and Co.
Its just fine. A boring but still still technically sound project from benny.
I usually don't review songs but. Megan is back and at your neck. This is one of the best diss tracks i've heard in a while, and the irony is, each line could be about like 20 people.
