I came across this album because Davey Havok of AFI was sporting a "Theme for Great Cities" shirt in a recent photoshoot, and I decided to listen to it from the beginning instead of skipping right to that particular track. A couple tracks in, I swapped my earbuds for my wife's better quality headphones to continue listening because I was immediately loving what I was hearing...and then I finally got to "Theme for Great Cities". I can't remember when a first-time ... read more
I don't think I could have asked for a better birthday present than a new AFI song that once again exceeds my high hopes. The sound and atmosphere they've achieved here feels like a converging of all of their influences and previous iterations, and as someone who has been following their evolutions for nearly 20 years, it makes perfect sense as their next step while still maintaining a fresh & bold sound.
The first half of this album is an incredible run. Disease, Abracadabra & Perfect Celebrity are all now up there as some of my favorite Gaga songs of all time. She especially surprised me with the influences on PC including The Cure & NIN. Hearing these songs performed live has been even more interesting, she has been experimenting with different arrangements and acoustic versions right off the bat & it pairs so well with the raw power of her live vocals.
The second half of the ... read more
I'm always happy to listen to a band that cites AFI as a huge influence on their sound (and in this case, their name too!). Great stuff.
I only just started listening to Dorian Electra about a month ago, but this album grew on me awfully fast. Hard to pick a favorite track, there's a lot of catchy earworms on here -- Idolize, Freak Mode, Anon & Touch Grass to name a few. Love the closer track. The album did a great job at no two songs sounding too much alike, but everything is still very cohesive.
I found this CD in a record shop when I was in high school, and I forget if it was seeing Audra or Voltaire on the track listing that made me decide to pick it up. "All My Lovers" by Black Tape for a Blue Girl has especially stuck with me all these years later.
I've been doing a bi-weekly album listening club with a few friends lately, and since this album was picked I ended up listening to something that likely would have never entered my radar otherwise. We try to do at least one concentrated, note-taking listen to the album of the week front-to-back with the lyrics open in order to get to know the album a bit deeper than just throwing it on in the background, and I was really impressed with the lyrical themes on this album. If you're not an MLP ... read more
It’s been over 10 years since I’ve gotten to see Ludo live, but this live album helps fill that void. They are such a fun band to see in person, and the crowd here really delivered the energy too!
The synth solo that closes out “Complications” & the album as a whole was so beautifully discordant Going immediately up there on my mental shelf next to the flutes from Depeche Mode’s “Shame”, and that’s a compliment.
When she sang “I’ve been hiding that I’m sexual” I yelled at my speakers, “NO YOU HAVEN’T MEG! DID YOU FORGET ABOUT ‘DESIRE’?!?!”
Hate to be that person, but I don’t like the direction the sound & songwriting has taken. By halfway through this album I was already dreading having to finish it, and some of the auditory & lyrical choices straight up annoyed me. If you need me, I’ll be sticking with her debut album.
I saw this duo open for The Crüxshadows a few years ago, wonderfully spooky stuff 🖤
I had no idea this project was by the same person who started Drab Majesty until literally today, I’m so bad at the internet. This record is absolutely fantastic.
I have fond memories of writing out the lyrics to this album in red glittery gel pen in my middle school diary, complete with little cartoon skulls drawn along the side. This album, as well as The Black Parade, were some of the biggest influences in my life, and I’m incredibly grateful that I got to experience the rise of MCR during my adolescence.
I used the money I got for my 11th birthday and went to Target the next day to buy this album (with my parent’s permission, somehow). It was life-changing; I’d spend the next several years completely and totally obsessed with everything Green Day, and it laid the foundation for my musical taste, as I later went on to fall in love with AFI, My Chemical Romance, and several other punk & hardcore bands. It doesn’t get played as often these days & my past self may be ... read more
What can I say about this album that hasn’t already been said? It’s a masterpiece from start to finish, every single element from the instrumentation to the lyrics, and even the art direction for the liner notes (or, if you’re a nerd like me, the special edition Clandestine book) is flawless. I was a little too young for this record when it first came out, but thanks to MTV I did hear Girl’s Not Grey & The Leaving Song, Pt. II. Because of those two songs, I sought ... read more
This album is INCREDIBLY underrated. It came out when I was 15 and it’s been a staple in my life ever since. Favorite tracks are Torch Song, Beautiful Thieves, Too Shy to Scream & Darling, I Want to Destroy You…but I always find myself listening to this album from start to finish anyways. Maybe it’s not a “classic” in the way Sing the Sorrow or Decemberunderground is, but it is a vital part of AFI’s history & such a solid rock record, and I ... read more
How the fuck did it take me until 2022 to listen to The Nerve Agents?!?!?
Someone on the AFI subreddit recommended this album because it has a lot of the spirit of AFI circa 1997-1999, and I love it!
