Nick Drake - Pink Moon
93

com·fort (/ˈkəmfərt/) - a state of physical ease and freedom from pain or constraint.

Pink Moon offers both none of this, yet all of this. Nick Drake's third album, compared to the orchestral arrangements of Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter, is his most stripped-down work yet: only featuring his half-coherent voice and his guitar, with a sole piano overdub on the first track.

its minimalism is its greatest strength. recorded in 4 hours total over two nights, with half the ... read more

suaveeee

i swear, all the Brazilian albums from this time period must be enchanted because it's insane how they're all so good. the vocals just fit the instrumentals so perfectly; they're just so bright and pretty. one of my only wishes is for the album to be longer. the 29 minute runtime is really such a shame because it just leaves me wanting more.

it's a blend of so many different genres of music and Verocai executes it all so skillfully. really, it's just so ... read more

the tropical and smooth instrumentals backed with the effortless vocals are just sooooo good; it's a dreamy and enchanting listen that reminds me in a sense of The Beach Boys, but also very different.

the melodies are lush and sun-kissed, creating this nostalgic but fresh atmosphere. it's definitely an album you want to play on days where you just want to sit back, relax, and let the music take you away.

Grace Jones - Nightclubbing

it's a really solid and funky album, not much to say about the music other than that there's a great atmosphere.

but the cover is so AWESOME, it's so cold, man. it really is unfortunate that you can't see it on spotify.

death's dynamic shroud - 失われた時REGRET [Regret When It Was Lost]

the soundscape is cold, unforgiving, and haunting.

i first want to talk about the cover of the album; when i scroll through albums to listen to, the cover is a key factor on whether i listen to it or not. the wireframed figure on the cover really does convey the overall atmosphere of the album: it's like a broken memory that is replayed, which creates this "slow burn" to the listeners.

this "slow burn" is toyed with throughout the album. some of the tracks are right ... read more

Daft Punk - Alive 2007

I LOVE DAFT PUNK!

Alive 2007 is a killer live album; it is some of the duo's best songs given new life through mashups of tracks from all their albums. the atmosphere changes from this dark and heavy rhythmic atmosphere into something ingeniously melodic and euphoric. also, seeing (on the tracklist) and hearing "Music Sounds Better With You" (their Stardust track) as the final piece was an unexpected but fantastic surprise. it's a great closer that calls back to the ... read more

"We are the Yes of the Third World" - Charly Garcia

released during the Guerra Sucia (Dirty War) in Argentina--a period of oppression that coincided with Operation Condor, a coordinated campaign of state terror across South America's Southern Cone--the self-titled album by La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros provides both a unique Latin prog rock experience and creative social commentary. the lyrics, with their abstract meanings, could be interpreted as allegories of the ... read more

Frank Zappa - Hot Rats

what a great album! i've put off listening to this album for a long time (for no real reason) but i wanted to hear it today, and it does not disappoint.

this album is defined by antitheses: it's long but focused; it's groovy but rock-y; it's strange but charming. Zappa's adroit craftsmanship is shown throughout the album with his blend of jazz and gritty blues rock, mixed with his experimentation and long solos. The first track, "Peaches en Regalia," is ... read more

Sufjan Stevens - Michigan

Michigan is a great starting point for Sufjan Stevens that he polished and perfected in Illinois. It's definitely a lot purer of a Folk experience than Illinois but nevertheless, it's still a very consistent project with no weak songs.

"Illinois isn’t just an album about a state, it’s about the states we live in: of mind, of memory, of spirit."
