Massive Attack - Mezzanine
96

Man oh man what have I stumbled upon... what the hell is "industrial trip hop"? The constant dirty, wobbly basslines matched with abrupt, gritty guitar, a rawness you can't fall into, rather craft. The contrast between the band's main vocalist with his straightforward yet entrancing delivery and the multiple vocalists who bring an ethereal presence to these tracks. This groundbreaking electronic production mixed brilliantly into this dark rock ambient setting, creating a ... read more

GABUISLOST - all these faces

A fun little listen! It's easy to catch the vibe of this energetic bedroom pop project. All the songs apart from "your friend" are very light and catchy, especially tracks like "PUNCTURE WOUND" and "RUSH". Production shines on tracks "smile" and "goodbyeee" with some bright synth melodies. Vocals pair very nicely with the production at all times, definitely some drain gang influences on his inflection. Overall a very glossy project, ... read more

Pink Siifu - BLACK'!ANTIQUE
55

BLACK'!ANTIQUE has a lot of experimental charm that I've come to enjoy, murky and muddy production and limited song structure. The noisy, urgent atmosphere was lively boisterous and frightening (in a good way), but definitely got too repetitive and bland for my liking as the runtime for each song went on, as well as the album itself. The first ~6 songs at least meaningfully switched up the beats/vibes a few times and are by far the best part of the album. The further I got into the ... read more

Denzel Curry - King of the Mischievous South Vol. 2
93

Denzel Curry proves once again why his name gets mentioned among the greatest to ever do it. The production featuring beats on a spectrum from exhilarating and inciting to murky and sinister, and everything in between. And Curry bodies them all. In fact most of the features on this project bring their game, many of them matching the artist's energy if not exceeding.

One thing that sets this album apart for me is the straightforward lyricism. The project doesn't have to subvert ... read more

Lupe Fiasco - Samurai

This album did not click with me. The rapping is very skillful and shows off technical prowess. The beats are fairly polished and clean, but lacking anything truly noteworthy. The product is very good, I just didn't find anything in this album for me. It's hard for me to follow along with lyrics in a lot of rap because it just goes over my head. Even when I opened a tab with the lyrics on it, it's hard to keep up. Regardless, the album is good, solid vibe, just a little ... read more

Very fun listen, some energetic, dirty R&B mixed with some very classy jazz elements. The bassline and percussion kept me bouncing while the ensemble of flutes, horns, and piano provided a lighter overtone, a unique dichotomy. The vocals often take a backseat to further promote the dreamy and/or racing production. The percussion is also very engaging, the artist opting for many unusual instruments like clicks and clacks, tambourines, and whatever that wood stick on wood instrument is ... read more

FKA twigs - EUSEXUA
90

As someone who hasn't been exposed to the FKA twigs hype, I hopped on the anticipation bandwagon for this album when I heard snippets like Drums of Death on Twitter. She did not disappoint.

EUSEXUA and Perfect Stranger were instant playlist adds when they were both dropped respectively. The texture of songs like Sticky and 24hr Dog are so hypnotic (for opposite reasons). Even Childlike Things, which really has no place in this album, was a fine listen, which says a lot since it was by ... read more

Mk.gee - Two Star & The Dream Police
74

Such a strange album, it's so hard to describe the experience because it takes a few listens to really understand what to listen for. Upon first listen it felt incomplete, the lack of much percussion and other filler makes this a confusing listen. A lot of the songs blend too heavily into each other and it can be hard to pick out highlights in this album.

But the more you listen, the more you get it, the more you're taken away into this dreamy world of wonderment. During the highest ... read more

Fugazi - Repeater
55

Unfortunately this album really didn't click with me. I was excited for my first listen after giving the 13 Songs compilation a try, but this project felt a little more lost. It felt like they lost some of their identity, the band isn't going wild with the guitar and drum solos that I became used to. The vocals sound less inspired, I don't *believe* what they're saying the way I did on 13 Songs. It just feels watered down, and I hate to feel like it's *me* who just ... read more

Fugazi - Fugazi

Huge fan of this EP, there's a slight notable difference between the first half of "13 Songs" versus the second half.

Self-titled is packed with gradual climbs into explosions of energy. The instrumentation takes a backseat during most of the verses and let the singing shine through, but that doesn't mean the guitar and drums are hiding by any means. The vocals thrive off the foundation laid down and help them evolve as the rest of the band picks up the pace. The song ... read more

Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher

Such a warm album. Inviting, listening, understanding, maturing album. Life is Strange album. Beautiful subtle vocals, a lovely mix of reverb on subdued orchestra. The vocals always shine above the production, but the composition lives in heighten Phoebe's talent. Just a mesmerizing listen for when you're wifemaxximg a one person dinner.

Charli xcx - BRAT
92

There's always a new gem to find in BRAT. The booming production will leave you disoriented, the same way you will be left in the dust if you don't catch the vibe. The album paints the club scene as a glamorous and destructive haven, a place meant to self-express without fear of judgement, the only fear being the realization of what is. Hope that makes sense idk, that's what I got out of it. Rewind is the only hard skip.

Radiohead - In Rainbows

I fall asleep to this album sometimes because it's so soothing, even the upbeat tracks are pleasant to doze to. The tracks are so diverse while the whole project remains unified in its ambience. Every track has its beauty to find yourself lost in.

Porter Robinson - SMILE! :D
100

A brighter sound than what was previously bright and an admission to cringe, all while staying faithful to himself and somewhat returning to his roots. God he does not miss. The gritty textures deeply ingrained in beautiful synths (and whatever other electro sounds there are idk I'm not a nerd), the modded vocal performances, the exploration of knowledge learned through growth (same as we saw on Nuture), wow wow wow. I keep coming back.

His production will always interest me, at my heart ... read more

Porter Robinson - Nurture

A cohesive symphony that feels exactly how the cover suggests: existing in a naturally glitter meadow, observing beauty, including the beauty found in grief. A Studio Ghibli film in audio format, a complete slice of life. There's a whole universe in this album waiting to show its warm embrace.
