Dirty Mind marks the first time we truly see Prince as the icon we know him as today. Takes the blueprint of the last two albums and pushes them to all new heights, a pattern that would become common in his discography. A great album and a solid follow-up to For You, Prince's self titled effort sees a definite increase in his songwriting skills and starts to define Prince as an artist a bit more. However I find that it just doesn't flow quite as well or is as consistent as it's predecessor, falling a bit short towards the middle, although it does more than enough to repair this in the latter half. Overall an amazing sophomore release.
Definitely one of my personal favourite Prince records. A damn near flawless mix of jams that never lets up or overstays it's welcome. I understand the argument that this doesn't quite live up to what Prince would soon become, but it makes me sad to see all of the negativity towards this album. Although I suppose it's a testament to his unmatched talent and consistent output that this is considered to be one his supbar efforts by many.
