The Altogether - Silo
70

I found this through Brian David Gilbert and honestly I still think See The Day is the standout song on this record. The rest is really solid, too, but much more chill and introspective. I suppose I'm really here for the particular sound of BDG above all else.

Hot Mulligan - Why Would I Watch
80

I am so late to the Hot Mulligan party, but I gave this a listen out of nowhere and it was a really great midwest emo album. Gans Media Retro Games really stood out. Honestly just such a win for the Wax Bodega stable of musicians.

Orestes Gómez - No me fui porque quise
78

Really solid album of collaborations. I found this through All Songs Considered on NPR and honestly it was one of the standouts of their Jan 30th album.

While everything is incredibly diverse, with Gomez as the percussion on all of them, I think PERO NAH! and MATA' both stood out from the rest as far as my own preferences.

Fredrik - Na Na Ni
75

A really interesting folk-experimental album, I was genuinely a little sad when I listened to it that there wasn't a ton of additional work they've put out in the last decade.

Lorien Testard - Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (Original Soundtrack)
95

Absolutely phenomenal game soundtrack. I was and still am skeptical of the sweep this game had of awards this year, but I am absolutely convinced it deserves best soundtrack. The earnest songs are so earnest and hard hitting and emotional, while the moments where the tension is allowed to break Testard really puts his all into a unique composition. Exquisite.

Anjimile - The King
80

Giver Taker held and important place in my life, and I listened to The King right when it came out and at the time I didn't think I liked it all that much. But relistening later I think I was just comparing it to what I liked in Giver Taker. I still really enjoy Anjimile's singing voice and the intimacy, as all these songs also feel as though they are meant to be heard in a small cozy space. The heavy lyrics and darker atmosphere feel much more at home in December as I write this than ... read more

Anjimile - Giver Taker
90

This album is one of the hardest ones for me to review. I discovered Anjimile through his song "Maker" that made it to track 6 on this album, which was a big part of my early covid listening, along with the rest of this album. There's an intimacy in the vocals and the production that I really enjoy and I think complements the songwriting really well.

LAUSSE THE CAT - The Mocking Stars
80

Listening to this I really appreciated the chill atmosphere on this whole album, and it gave me a similar vibe to some of the best of nujabes, where I'm not broken out of the atmosphere by the lyrics nor do the lyrics seem wildly out of vibe with music. The low-mixed volume I think helped with that when I gave it a listen on spotify, since it made the whole experience feel lounge-y, if someone could perform a little vaudeville show in a lounge.

The Mountain Goats - Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan
75

I really enjoyed this album, it had a really nice easy listening quality to it that I don't always find to be the case with the work of the Mountain Goats. It feels quiet and intimate in scope, even when the guitars swell. I especially enjoy the the layering of guitar with classical string plucking in the early tracks. I feel as though this would be a wonderful album to hear on cassette

Girl Talk - Feed The Animals
80

I had this album recommended to me by a classmate and wow, it's so much fun to listen to. I really enjoyed hearing the nostalgic samples and there's one for a song I can't quite place from the mid 2000s, a folk-y indie pop song by an artist named Noel, I believe, that was such a blast from the past. Modifying the samples to be faster or slower to match also just warmed my nightcore-loving heart.

Various Artists - A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night
90

I absolutely adore this soundtrack, enough that I got myself a vinyl copy. The ambient tracks have such a strong western feel, and then the inclusion of the diegetic tracks as well really break it up in a pleasant way. I was introduced to Death by White Lies through this film and now every time I hear it I can only think of the disco ball scene which is probably one of my favorite parts of the whole movie.

This has gotten away from me, but great film and great soundtrack

The KVB - Always Then
69

A darkwave classic, especially the title track, and very gritty. I fear maybe a little guitar forward for me? It feels like a lot of the beat and vocals are in the back of the mix

Khalid - after the sun goes down
72

Lighthearted and poppy, I don't know that anything really reaches the highs of Location, but I really like Angel Boy and Out of Body

Purity Ring - purity ring
70

Cohesive and smooth, a pleasant listen but at the same time nothing really jumped out and caught my attention from this one.

Lou Reed - Transformer
70

I feel as though this album, as great as some of its best songs are, is so ingrained in music history that the perception of its aesthetic quality is a little overinflated. Listening 50+ years after the release, I can hear Lou's influence on others (Especially Ezra Furman)

Tiny Stills - Falling Is Like Flying
70

A pretty solid album, very upbeat with some interesting emo tinges. I enjoyed it and would definitely come back for their next one!

Tipper - Forward Escape
85

A really interesting soundscape album. I found myself hardly even noticing the transitions from song to song and instead just enjoying the atmosphere. Perhaps Psybient is worth a deeper dive in my future.

Taylor Swift - The Life of a Showgirl
20

Okay, I mean, I know Taylor Swift is known for the love song, but to my knowledge the success of these in the past were due to a very broad expression of the feeling of love that other people could enjoy on their own. However, this reads more like an annoying coworker gushing about their latest tryst after a couple good dates and a hookup with someone new. When the sentiment isn't about how in love she is, then it turns instead to out-of-touch self-victimization in Eldest Daughter, ... read more

游彩 (Yusai) - 雨
90

I stumbled across the title track of this EP by accident today and the traditional instrumentation that opened it up just really hooked me compared to most of the other Visual Kei I've been listening to. As I tried to dig up more info about Yusai, I was sad to learn they had disbanded after just 3 EPs. 雨 (Rain) is such an interesting trio of songs with a unique folk-touch that I find really special. I immediately found the A and B type CDs for sale and picked them up.

KAMIJO - Sang
65

I've been on a VKei kick today, and I decided to give this whole album a listen since I liked some of the classical elements of what I heard on mademoiselle and Castrato. Overall, I think the album is alright but nothing mindblowing beyond the intros of those last two songs. The final tree Sang entries, however, are a wonderful blend of DragonForce and classical violin.
