Felt like someone was opening up to me but i didnt know the person enough to truly understand or care about what they were saying. The instrumentation was more used as a background for the poetry to flow on, I'd have liked better if it was more prominent in the mix. Lyrics were great, great storytelling and definitely made me feel something.
first 5 tracks were golden, last 5 not so much. I enjoyed hearing the bjork, pj harvey and portishead influence, though it maybe wasnt an influence but more of an aspiration of Clark to compare to those godesses. The industrial and art pop elements gave the tracks a lot of color, in the first half, that is. Production and progression of the tracks was very good too. Her voice really shines through in these tracks.
But man, the later half left me feeling pretty bored. Nothing really happened. ... read more
love the funky stevie wonder influences here, pretty solid listen. Most things work out nice, i like jazz too much to not vibe hard with this.
Very intimate and sad. The first 6 songs are really beautiful, but past that, it just doesnt hit as hard. Some songs try to ramp up the energy a bit, which sometimes does work, while it also feels quite out of place. The slowcore aspects keep its pretty minimalistic, which works fantastic in the first half, the 2nd half just feels a bit dull.
Ive listemed to too much opeth, so i cant unhear the resemblance, but this is a bit more modern, more diverse in sound but also more of the inevitable nerdy noodling that you get with a lot of progressive stuff. Guitar solos are pretty fun, but not near top notch. The metalcore aspects were really great and well combined with death/even djent(??) grooves. Creative and wild.
A good and warm talk with a friend you havent talked to in a bit. Turns out its not just chit chat, the conversation changes something in you. It leaves you with a smile, which makes you keep coming back.
I imagine this giant drill - 30 meters across, about 50 long - agressively tearing its way through earth's core, puncturing through the layers of our very own earth. Heat, radiating off of the spiraling cone, illuminating its past journey. There seems to be no end in sight, but nothing stops the paths to be made. Walls of earth, stone, granite, ores shoot beside you, followed by their clones.
There are moments, where the machine seems to have entered a certain state of emptiness, of ... read more
Tortoise would follow this album with their opus, "TNT". The minimalistic post-rock where no one is trying to out-do anyone else is being prepared for absolute peak on this record. I feel tortoise hadn't yet been able to fully bloom to their biggest - while keeping it down - on this release. Their ability to make comfortable music to man's ear was already perfected. Liked listening, would revisit, maybe just a bit pale for now.
On this album, every note hits a different emotion: awe, hopelessness, despair, grief, anger, anguish; this is a loaded one. At some points, i couldnt even hold back my tear ducts from opening up, quite rare for me these days. I think the album fulfilled the expectations exactly as needed. Then why isnt this a 100? The album was too long for me, there's one. I also did feel that some moments did feel a bit drawn-out - while this did contribute to the total feel - i wasnt very engaged ... read more
A fun record in a genre that is growing on me by the minute: Post-hardcore! The riffs are good, and the album felt consistent. But it seemed like no track had much worth on its own. Not to say they are bad, but i think most songs would not have engaged me as much as i did, had i listened to them individually. I know i need to relisten to gather my thoughts and have a clear mind on what i think of this album. Sadly i am very bad at actually relistening to a near-great album, so this will ... read more
I had high anticipation for this album when i pressed play. I was hoping for the piano pop/rock similar to "When the pawn", or "Tidal". To my surprise this album felt much, much different. It was big, emotional, and mostly raw. Fiona's raw emotions are heard in her delivery and the overall production of the album. I like that difference to her earlier works(i havent heard "The idler wheel" and "Extraordinary machine" yet). On the other hand i had ... read more
