cozy and nostalgic, this album is melancholy yet still brings a sense of warmth and hopefulness. no matter how much you fall, you will get up. life goes on. the way porter is able to create beautiful electronic sounds yet still keep an overall theme of nature makes me want to faceplant into a field of flowers and lay there for a day or two with this album on loop.
when dark first came out, i appreciated the album and jon’s work but did not feel particularly drawn to this particular release. with this deluxe version, he has dropped five fantastic songs that round out the album for me. i fell in love with trophy hunting upon the first listen, and have had it on loop since. hearing this album live has really made me appreciate eden’s genius even more with both his lyrics and production.
the mixing and harmonies on this album are spectacular, and the storytelling on each track is also insane. ceilings may have been the most popular, but firearm deserves a mention as one of the best tracks on this album.
raw, emotional, beautiful. the way each track flows into the next creates a whole new level of cohesiveness and builds the story in an exceptional way. wake up literally saved my life, and gravity has been on loop since i’ve heard it. my favorite ep of all time.
four of my favorite songs of all time (oceans & engines, anaheim, backburner, and autumn) are on this album, which brings the score up by a decent amount. absolutely heartbreaking lyrics, and the short film that goes along with the album cuts even deeper. despite discovering this album at a very low point in my life when the songs were more relatable, i still find myself revisiting it during brighter times. an enjoyable album i can play to match any mood.
