múm - History of Silence

A nice little album, I enjoyed it. Basically been using this album to help me to sleep. Although don't try falling asleep to "Our Love is Distorting", you'll get a heart attack. There isn't really a lot to say here, some lovely background music but it's nothing special. If not for the reason that some songs here went into my 'sleep' playlist, I would probably forget about this album.

my bloody valentine - loveless
79

It's pretty good and a classic shoegaze album, although I found some of the songs a bit underwhelming. The songs I like though are nearly perfect like "sometimes" and "when you sleep", two masterpieces. You can clearly hear the similarities to the Cocteau Twins in their style, one of my favourite bands. The transitions are rough but work really well, but for a shoegaze album I kinda just wish more of the songs flowed into each other. It can sometimes feel disjointed or ... read more

Phantogram - Eyelid Movies
60

First two tracks fucking SLAP, the rest are a bit more nuanced. Like I didn't really like this on my first listen but some of the songs have warmed up to me. There are some super catchy tunes, beeps and bops in here that have had me interested in this album for a while, but I feel that some of the songs fell a bit short or were just a little dissappointing idk. The song "You Are The Ocean" starts out good until the lyrics start and it becomes kinda meh, then that droning sound ... read more

Sigur Rós - Ágætis byrjun
98

In the years after graduating, before Chandler started losing his eyesight and hearing, I would take him with me to my grandmothers house in the woods by a lake. We would spend the summer nights there in a camper and hang out in the house during the day. I would mostly go there so I could get really stoned and spend time with him outside, it was one of the only ways a city slicker like me could actually get out and spend the night in the countryside. The camper had windows all around and a ... read more

Faith No More - Angel Dust
93

God I can't stop fucking listening to this. There are some songs here which I fucking hate and love at the same time, like wtf is that stupid ass bass in "Land of Sunshine" and the spelling bee song "Be Aggressive".. Still can't stop listening to them, they're ridiculously good and catchy. The same goes for songs like "RV" and "Everything's Ruined", one is ridiculous, both are amazing. Even some of the songs that I didn't like ... read more

Chelsea Wolfe - Hiss Spun
81

Definitely a darkwave banger to have a total breakdown to. Love the almost electric feeling it gives when a song hits its peak, like in "16 Psyche" and the middle of "Spun", "Twin Fawn" and "Scrape", but I also feel that there can be a little lack of variation but it still has it's moments and they're fucking strong. An orchestra of doom, really powerful at times.

Maruja - Pain to Power
86

Damn, powerful. Nice to hear a newer album with relevant and actually meaningful lyrics. It's a jazzy rock orchestra and both the lyrical and more instrumental sections resonate heavily with me. The beginning of Trenches reminds me of some samples from older rap albums, but that's probably just me. The real question is why I don't listen to stuff like this anymore? What happened.

Favourite tracks in order:
1. Look Down on Us
2. Bloodsport
3. Saoirse

Oklou - choke enough
76

I almost couldn't believe this came out in 2025 when I first heard 'harvest sky', she really captured that early 2000s eurobop feeling with some of these songs and that's kinda impressive. The muted vocals and synths gAAAh scratching all my y2k itches and turning my brain smooth once again. A very dreamy, and if it's even legal to say, sleepy album, it really has that peak Y2K atmosphere. Although because the theme is so consistent throughout the album I find the only ... read more

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
74

The thing with 'Sound of Silver' is that it's very hit or miss with me. I kinda hated 'Get Innocuous' until recently but 'Someone Great' and 'All My Friends' are really some of the bands highlights and two of my favourite songs of all time, the latter having a very euphoric conclusion. The lyrics are just wack and the beats are fun, but I don't entirely freak with everything on here. Some of the songs annoy me a lot but it's probably ... read more

Beach House - Depression Cherry
85

Of course I gotta rate this dreampop gem. This album was the soundtrack for a substantial part of my adolescence. Even though I don't listen to it as regularly as before, I still wouldn't skip it if it came on. It's synthy ambience is consistent throughout the album, it doesn't variate much but that's not a problem. It's a great album for if you want to sit and contemplate, smoke out or just take it easy for a while. Idk it's hard to find a lot to say about ... read more

AJR - Living Room
4

I wanted it to stop through every song, a reminder that I did this to myself..... I always disliked AJR but now I think I just hate them instead. I feel like they have the ability to produce but they don't know what to do with it and don't have ANY musical ability past that. The lyrics are so painful, shallow and plain I don't even think I would have liked this when I was 10, and THAT is an insult. This is the most tone deaf 2015 white bread piece of drivel I have ever heard. The ... read more

Bassvictim - Forever
66

It's no masterwork but it scratches my guilty pleasure spot for nostalgia laced beats and bops. The first tracks transition into the second track, my favourite, was very nice and abrupt and I'm surprised I skipped it for so long. While not great, there is something raw and youthlike in Maria's voice that goes super well with the electronics. It really gives me a lot of weird feelings of fake nostalgia. I'm not sure how to describe it other than it sometimes sounds like ... read more

Strawberry Switchblade - 1982 4-Piece Demo
94

I am OBSESSED with 'Trees and Flowers' from this demo release. I think the acoustic versions are much better than their album release counterparts and the synthpop style that they're known for. This and their cover of Sunday Morning from '84 are probably my favourite songs by them in general.

Favourite tracks in order:
1. Trees and Flowers
2. Go Away
3. Spanish Song

Television - Marquee Moon
90

Genuinely great album, a literal classic. Verlaine's coarse vocals compliment the bass and drumwork so damn well it's a bit magical. While all the instrumentals are great, I do find there to be a lack of cohesion from song to song. Structurally it's a bit varied and feels more like a compilation than an album. It's not a terrible thing but it's usually not an album I'd throw on to listen to the whole thing at once. That aside, Marquee Moon and Elevation are ... read more

The Sundays - Reading, Writing and Arithmetic
80

The most "cinematic" album I've listened to in a while, makes it feel like I'm living inside of some early 2000s movie, but in a good way..? The second track, 'Here's Where the Story Ends' being my introduction to The Sundays back in like 2016, and is definitely the best song on here. But like all the other songs this one really helps to capture the 90s nostalgia very well. Harriet's dreamy voice and the soft-pop beats really make this special, I think ... read more

Ex:Re - Ex:Re
82

Lyrically it's an extremely depressing album but some of the songs have imprinted themselves on my mind for probably forever now, it's certainly a nice album for coping with depression or trauma. I used to listen to this a lot around the time it came out but I've started coming back to it a lot this year, it gives me some kind of solace in knowing that you're not the only one who feels this way. Stylistically it sounds a lot like Daughters other work but darker and with more ... read more

múm - Finally We Are No One
81

I love several songs on this album, but it's probably not an album I'd throw on to listen to every track in order. They all hit different chords with me, some somber, some oddly motivating, and some no chord at all. Like track 5 for example, I like it but I have no way of describing it except for it making me feel wobbly and bubbly. Track 3 is especially dear to me since it's a song I use when I'm both trying to fall asleep or when things just get a bit too much, and I think ... read more

Deafheaven - Infinite Granite
78

As somebody who has only just heard Deafheaven at a friends recommendation, I found them surprisingly good. I must admit that upon first listen through, the first few tracks didn't really grip me, but after the third track I found pretty much every song thereafter to be a banger all the way to the end. Even after my first re-listen with the context of the rest of the album, I started liking the first few songs a lot more. I really like how the three tracks from "Great Mass of ... read more

Grouper - Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill
92

Love this albums cold and dreamy atmosphere, it gives me chills. I'm not really sure if I'm dreaming or dying while listening to this album if not both. It really encapsulates how I currently feel in this bleak and dreary world, at least I can listen to stuff like this to take the edge off. While a lot of the songs aren't that different to one another in terms of tempo and tone, I still really like the general feeling that it was going for. I love the seamless transitions between ... read more

FKA twigs - EUSEXUA
90

This does really good things for my ears. It starts with 3 instantaneous bangers, perfect for both mental breakdowns and momentary euphoric release. Feels like somebody is clubbing inside my head when listening to this. The title track really hooked me right away and gets progressively more energetic, definitely the best track on the album and sets the mood for the rest of the album.
