MUDBOY delivers mosh raps with a cold, steely New York edge ... It’s its own coming-of-age album and the rare project from an über-hyped rap prospect that actually delivers on its promise.

HipHopDX

Sheck Wes could benefit from a bit more fine-tuning and editing. But the album’s low-points could very well be just some growing pains. Ultimately, Mudboy establishes him as an exciting up-and-comer with a fresh, electric style.

The 405

From front to back, there’s a particular charm to each and every cut that threads them together into a cohesive body of work, Sheck’s signature “bitch!” adlib serving as the proverbial icing on the cake.

Exclaim!

The best thing about Mudboy is that it's got me hooked on Sheck and his style, which is so clearly his own. The future looks bright for him; hopefully he does not disappoint.

There isn’t enough content in Mudboy to make it much other than a vibe.

Highsnobiety

MUDBOY is more a plod through some of modern rap’s worst habits than it is the frenzied dash into the future that “Mo Bamba” promised.

XXL

Mudboy stalls when Sheck Wes is forced to do the dirty work of rapping—writing coherent stories, spitting engaging verses, changing cadences and rhyme structures—basically anything that isn’t adlibbing the word “bitch” or saying his name incessantly.

The Needle Drop

Mudboy is one of the oddest trap rap albums I've heard in a while.

This album is just the beginning of Sheck's bright future

EDIT: Did I say bright?

EDIT2: Its just rough around the edges

Sheck Wes incessantly reminds you of the name of his album by whispering "m u d b o y" in your ear with the cadence of your creepy uncle whenever mom leaves the room...

Edit: I recently went to a concert where they played Mo Bamba as a warm-up song. There was no one onstage and nothing happening yet the crowd went insane. Huh.

One of the most mind-numbing, headache-inducing, boring, uninteresting, colorless, bland, simple, one-dimensional albums I've ever listened to. This guy has no appeal whatsoever. No, nothing on this album bangs at all.

Looks like an ambitious project, but it doesn't sound like it. He demonstrates potential on this album, but also doesn't fully embrace it here. He has a different voice and in general the production is on point, even though he doesn't really presents a unique aesthetic or style.

Basically it's an above average album from an artist that can easily grow up to be great. And that's cool imo

EDIT: The songs on here range from great (Mo Bamba, WESPN) to awful (Kyrie, Live Sheck Wes), it's a very ... read more

Mo Bamba and Live Sheck Wes will always go hard but this is really boring. Spacey beats, rarely does he say much of anything, and “mudboyyyy” adlibs are so annoying.
