AllMusic

If Not Winter is the work of an artist who thinks and dreams big, and it secures Wisp's place as one of the acts defining the sound of shoegaze in the 2020s.

NME
Natalie Lu’s debut album sheds the mystique, revealing her strongest songwriting yet.

Clash
If this is the next wave of shoegaze, then the legacy of my bloody valentine, Slowdive et al is in creative hands.

Kerrang!
At its best, it’s pure, soul-soothing escapism. And yet, this is only the start – as she grows, she'll evolve and mould everything she’s absorbed into an even more individual sound.

Paste

With only a little over a year between her debut EP and first album, Lu has shown impressive growth and an appetite for carving out her niche in the alt-rock genre.

The Line of Best Fit
The album positions Wisp as both seer and survivor and captures a generational mood: youthful tumult, yearning for connection in isolating times.

strong 5, quite an underwhelming effort for a debut, extremely safe and unadventurous.

Wisp is a promising project; there is no doubt about it, but its first LP does not accomplish the expectations that were set by the previous EP, Pandora. If Not Winter could be easily defined as an album that lacks the courage to try different things and explore the band's sound, as the majority of the tracks feel tremendously formulaic and typical of Shoegaze and its derivatives. It could be arguable ... read more

Fun Fact: Did you know that T.J. McConnell once recorded 9 steals in one half of play, which eventually made him only the 4th NBA player to record a triple-double with over 10 steals.

Absolutely dreamy and great record from Wisp. I expected something more commercially sounding, easier to the ears, and the album is definitely easy to listen to, but it was much more than that. it had many aspects than just being “dreamy” or having “pretty” components to it. It’s ... read more

So many major label debuts this year what the heck

After blowing up just 2 years ago with some smash hit shoegaze songs like "Your face", Wisp has become one of the most popular artists in the younger shoegaze scene. And I definitely can see why. She scratches a lot of the itches that makes shoegaze and dream pop very enjoyable genres to listen to, and she also has a very soft yet alluring voice that I imagine will draw at least some people in, especially considering how well it fits ... read more
