Doubtlessly, Hellripper has dropped their finest release so far with Coronach, though a few small adjustments could have boosted it to undisputed excellence.
BLACK METAL?
The "coronach" is a dirge traditionally performed at funerals in the Scottish Highlands.
The musical influences on an album like this are so many that it's difficult to define a single, definitive essence.
The lyrics, tied to Scottish folk traditions, certainly don't help define it, but calling it Black Metal seems excessive, if not pure madness.

the best album I've heard so far this year, absolutely fire. The guitarwork here was just pure ear candy
I don't see how this record stands out in the overwhelming SEA of Black Metal coming out these days. Sure, it has that Speed Metal edge, with some melodic riffs and a Heavy Metal/Hard Rock feel at times, but songwriting-wise, it's servicable at best, forgettable at worst. Did talented musicians make it? Absolutely. Are some of the riffs technical? Absolutely. Is that enough to make this a good album when it has nothing else going for it? Absolutely not.
