Dread Scott has to be in contention for the most east-coast-sounding west-coast rapper of the early 90's. Even when you compare similar western jazz rap acts like The Pharcyde and Souls of Mischief, he shows more resemblance to groups like Digable Planets and A Tribe Called Quest than anyone else. His delivery sounds very NY-influenced as well, with a rather Das EFX-esque flow and voice. But while the influences are very apparent across the board, he still proves to be an original emcee, ... read more

While you may think based on the cover and album title that Dred Scott may have something to do with Digable Planet's sophomore album Blowout Comb, but in actuality Scott beat them to the title and artwork by 7 months. FULL REVIEW: 1994, LA. Released on the wrong coast and 3 years too late, this album and some of its best tracks should sit comfortably within the cannon of classic boom-bap jazz rap – if only more people knew about it. It has the gorgeous beats, the bars, the bangers and a little star quality; the subtly Caribbean tinged rhythms of Scott’s delivery and his dark sense of humour make him a bright buoy in the sea of 90s jazz rap.

someone already said this but yeah Breakin' Combs is the most east coast sounding west coast album ever, next to Lyfe N' Tyme by the B.U.M.S. and anything Homeliss Derilex put out. Dred Scott is originally from NY if that makes it make sense for you... either way this album is jazzy and fun and dope and it has aged really well. very much worth listening to.

All these years later, the album still holds up. I still think it’s underrated, though I wouldn’t call it essential listening. This is more for the hip hop purist or completist.

Back then, I remember ... read more
