On her eponymous debut album, Janet Jackson demonstrates no distinctive musical personality of her own, which isn't surprising considering that she was in her teens.

This honestly isn't that bad. I mean sure, with all of these Teen Pop albums, it's always the same argument that "It's still pretty good considering that a child made it" but for most of them, the only thing that they themselves had a part in, is the vocals that they sang. Discovering Janet Jackson: Debut albums are tricky, aren't they? Especially when the artist is so young and clearly had little to no creative input. She essentially showed up, sang what she was handed, and left. And honestly, it shows. There's a song or two here that probably earned some mild chart attention at the time, but the bulk of it is just... painfully generic. Nothing that hints at what she'd eventually become.
