Perhaps 3D doesn't blaze trails like their other albums, but it never plays it safe and it always satisfies, and it's one of the best modern soul albums of 2002.
The album isn't the romp it might have been had Lopes survived, but 3D solidly embodies black pop in a year in which it has lacked a center.
3D feels a little incomplete, like much of their work.
The four tracks involving Lopes are superb ... Elsewhere they audibly struggle.
This was released half a year after left eye’s death so I guess that’s why it feels rushed but they could’ve waited a bit longer to finish it anyway It’s not as good as crazysexycool or fanmail but it’s still a great album and it deserved way more recognition
3D was released only 6 months after Left Eye's passing and even though it was only partially recorded before that her presence is still very much felt. The album is still futuristic like FanMail but it sees them fully exploring the trademark hip hop production of the 00s. Honestly this album is pretty good and deserved much better, they truly shine on the ballads though.
Highlights: Girl Talk, Turntable and Damaged.
While it's diverse enough to be interesting all the way through, the actual singing on these songs is pretty one note. From the very first track you get everything from them that you'll hear throughout the rest of the album. There are some bumps in the road but overall it's pretty solid with at least a handful or tracks that I enjoyed quite a bit. Songs like "Girl Talk" and "Hands Up" really stick out.
