seven atmospheres of dissonance and halting melody, vocal stimming, and breath control, immersive and fascinating. simultaneously abstract and visceral. not as much depth and exploration as other works by Jarboe but still extremely satisfying for the initiate or the aficionado.
'Illusory' is Jarboe at her artiest, her most tasteful even, and if you wanted to be a little unkind you could say it showcases her at her least distinctive.
All the music presented here is well performed and pleasant (Jarboe? Just 'pleasant'? Pah!) but the album peaks with the self titled opener and a lot of the rest is made up of mood pieces which are far from revelatory in any regard.
