Simple Minds was a favourite band of mine when I was a twenty-something in the 80s. I loved the post-punk/new wave sound of their first albums. End of that decade I lost my interest in the band after I had experienced Jim Kerr at a concert in a stadium, which makes me feel Simple Minds were going on a "arena-synthrock" trip with theatralic gestures and becoming a mainstream act. In 1998 we'd see a bit of a reunion for Simple Minds: Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill, the only two remaining members at that point, got former bass player Derek Forbes back on board for one album. Also back on board: Peter Walsh, the man producing the band's breakthrough and often seen as magnum opus New Gold Dream.
