Splendid listen. A great slowcore release, one of the groups strongest records for sure!!!!!!
EDIT 2: CANT HIDE IT ANYMORE THIS IS A PERFECT CLASSIC
EDIT: had to bump this up, it's so good
a drowsy and dazed exploration of loss, uncertainty, loneliness, and depression that really shows the rawer, louder side of slowcore. a great album with a lot of impressive cuts.
fave tracks: sea; vacancy; washed up; tom; ides; wird; smoking room
least fave track: kitchen light
Detached, haunting, and bleak. While their alt-rock contemporaries were getting louder and denser Codeine opted for a more spacy approach, and in the process pioneered modern slowcore. Despite being one of the most important albums of the 90s it still seems to mainly live in the shadows - something that is perhaps fitting given the artistic palate.
some of the most depressing and bleak music probably ever created outside of bluetile lounge. While frigid stars is spacey and ethereal, the white birch is grounded and despondent.
Keep it up, baby!
I'm not quite sure why this is rated higher than Frigid Stars, since I personally think their debut is the better LP. This isn't really the slowcore style I enjoy, as it feels a bit too one-note melodically and the instrumental peaks and valleys didn't quite make up for that. The only tracks I truly enjoyed were 'Loss Leader' and 'Tom'. The rest seemed to meander a bit too much.
