She sounds older than her years on ‘Young Heart’. Sensitive piano-led ballads have always been Birdy’s bread-and-butter, but the new record pares back the production, her voice lightly annotated by keys, strings, and acoustic guitar.

A self-proclaimed voyager, Birdy spends little time dwelling on the specifics of her heartbreak or fully mapping the album’s emotional landscape, instead embracing the bliss of escape.

At times, Birdy’s lyrical themes of finding herself and overcoming heartache are a little overdone and, at 15 tracks, Young Heart is too long-winded for its own good. Even so, there is a lot to like here.

With a powerful voice like Birdy you can't really go full wrong.... what a talented woman. 'Young Heart' is a collection of romantic-esque songs that could be easily so damn generic, yet it got soul. It's a driven album, made me cozy for a while but at the same time it's "just ok" to be listening to this in the background. Birdy is suited to folk music, she was born to do it no matter what.
No “The Collective Collaborative Review” today, Birdy dropping her first album in five years is the only motivation I need to write something this time around! To be fair, its release neatly coincided with the end of school assessments, but aside from that I just didn’t really want to write any reviews anyway. I was debating whether to give Young Heart a 90–95, but I ultimately concluded that this album deserves even more appreciation for its artistic beauty, comforting instrumental backing and heavenly vocals. It’s the kind of album I can have on repeat without realising it, a gentle soundtrack to life that perfectly complements the cosy, reflective nature of the seasons. Birdy truly created something special, and it’s definitely among my all-time favourite albums.
