Potter dives headfirst into pure pop with Midnight, creating a gleaming confection that, at its best, could be mistaken for late-'80s AOR.
It’s a concise, hooky collection of songs with which the 32-year-old Potter has given herself chances to become bigger than ever as a solo name.
While Potter’s never sounded more assured, many of the songs are simply serviceable although not quite strong enough to ensure a status that could be considered classic.

Her vocals are great, just, the music itself feels like it’s trying to hard to get your attention
Technically her debut as a solo artist, although the previous band was always the Grace Potter Show, Potter does go full on pop here. She doesn't necessarily sell out, but the songwriting often doesn't justify the glossy production -- some of the pop songs are good, but in others, you can just see the dollar signs in everyone's eyes. Anytime she makes a bluesy or folksy detour, the album is much more compelling for it, even if it's at the cost of cohesiveness.
