I am still in awe just digesting the fact that I listened to such a perfectly curated album made by musicians from some of my favorite bands. Something about it just feels celebratory to me. my main concern was Christian trying not to sound too much like Slowdive. if this doesn't have his signature guitar sound, then what's the point. thankfully, he navigated that hazard brilliantly, and we get a surfeit of the bright ringing tones that we love so much. what we end up with is a competent set of poppy shoegaze songs punctuated by drums that sound like the Flaming Lips. that's because the drummer is Matt Duckworth from the Flaming Lips. it was an enjoyable listen but it didn't send ... read more
Lord knows I don't need any more beach-related band names in my life, but the Slowdive connection was the extra quality assurance I needed to give this a spin. Glad I did, as this album has a certain warmth that isn't present on a lot of shoegaze I've heard so far.
