I never knew overflowing, bursting, explosive star-forming joy could be put into sound until I listened to Coltrane’s “Joy”. Just as in A Love Supreme, Coltrane can capture love with a capital “L”. Here, he captures joy.
Not Trane's best work, but of course that's a high ass ceiling. Really good stuff. Especially loved "Leo"
A most curious work indeed; an unreleased John Coltrane album, now complete with overdubbing by his passionate and similarly talented wife, Alice Coltrane, five years after his death. By this time, she’d done plenty to push forward her late husband’s legacy and the movement of spiritual jazz he had once spearheaded, and it’s a point of fascination to see what such a mix could result in.
