The Neptunes-produced retro-thumper (the duo is everywhere) lets the ambitious blonde grunt, wail, and moan about how ”brothas gotta work it out.” It also proves that the singer, best known for riding poppy staccato beats, can get deep into a groove.

An absolutely infectious groove with lovely vocals, giving Beyoncé an incredibly strong debut single. The hard, bassy, horn-filled beat with her powerful vocals mixes into a lovely track.

The remixes are solid but not anything I would come back to a ton or anything like that.

rating the normal single only, it's okay not all that

now the remixes: the first one is 10 MINUTES? i mean it's more interesting than the original but i'm not listening to a 10 minute remix. and the others add up to another 10

This is the earliest Beyoncé song I can find, so I'm assuming it's the earliest Beyoncé song to exist. It's really just casual R&B and funk, solely existing to showcase Beyoncé's singing chops. The "Chad, blow your horn now" refrain kills. Beyoncé hitting those high notes is pretty cool. The song doesn't have too much variety or spice going for it, but it's not bad!
