Deftones feels in abundance on The Hellfire Club but this track is bang on and a fantastic album opener for Thornhill. Distorted and fuzzy production gives off a sometimes undesirable scratchy and fizzy sound in the mix on Leather Wings that takes away some of the hard hitting clarity and shine.
Blue Velvet starts clean and the vocals have a bit of that peak Muse vibe, the midsection is interesting with stings and falsetto vocals and works back into a wall of sound nicely.

Djentones. And I mean that in the nicest way possible.
Loathe can take elements of Deftones and make it special to their sound, why can't anyone else? The beefy guitar tone mixed with the angelic vocals, sometimes with this distorted soft delivery like in the latter parts of The Hellfire Club, are all things that call back to bands like the ones I mentioned prior. Although, their vocalist (Jacob Charlton) does seem to float in a much higher register comparatively. Thornhill packs in some ... read more
Despite the hype that has consistently surrounded them, I'll admit, I've never truly spent much time listening to Thornhill before. Their debut LP 'The Dark Pool' was acclaimed as one of the best heavy releases of that year, and even prior to that, they had gained a strong backing following their celebrated EP, 'Butterfly'. Honestly I underrated this album when it first came out. I still do not like the change in style from The Dark Pool, but the album is not bad at all. They made something unique and put a lot of work into it, and it sounds pretty good for the most part. I do hope they keep changing up their sound though I guess. Blue Velvet is a beautiful song.
My favorite songs are Blue Velvet, Raw, and the instrumental track.
Más allá de las obvias comparaciones con Deftones, este es un dinámico y excelentemente producido disco de metal alternativo. Como para tener ojo con Thornhill con lo que vayan a hacer a futuro.
TENUE 8/10
The epitome of tumultuous beauty. At least the first six songs. I absolutely can’t ignore how the vocals never lose steam. It’s eclectic, with layers of eclipsing energies and moods. Things dilate quickly, but aren’t likely to be missed. This traversing is very specific, and sometimes done with little to no flair. Not generically foreboding, but more disquieting and emanating. It’s all presently solid, one unit.
