Another great jazz record by the legendary artist and although many songs feel do on a bit too much, and there is a bit too much focus on the drumming on this record which is impressive but i wish these passages were shortened but with a warm soothing soundscape, i end up really enjoying this record and contains some impressive tracks like Lonnie's Lambert and the self titled opener.

A little bit uneven with some songs being pretty standard for Coltrane's standards, but man the high points on this are godlike. Wise One and Lonnie's Lament are some of the finest jazz pieces I've ever heard, Coltrane's warm sax and McCoy's relentless percussiolve piano melodies are a treat to listen to and while it's as compositionally brave as any of his later stuff, it's still incredible.

not as breathtaking or experimental as his later works, but still shows flashes of what was to come. the first two songs here are essential.

JONATHAN WILLIAM COLTRANE DEEP DIVE #42

A basic, but very well executed album.
You don't get really any experimentation of Crescent.
The only track I would consider a tad strange is The Drum Thing and even then it's just Elvin Jones goofing off for like five minutes.

What I like about this album specifically is it has really excellent long tracks.
First two tracks and Lonnie's Lament are so much better than the other two tracks, it's honestly astonishing.
Of course I love ... read more

All love and reverence to a jazz legend like John Coltrane, but The Drum Thing is such a "well, we signed a contract for five songs, we've only got four rehearsed, and we're on in seven minutes -- just slam on stuff and see what happens" type of song. The fact that it still managed to turn out reasonably good is a real testament to the quality of the work on here.
