Royal Scam is to Steely Dan's discography what Here, My Dear is to Marvin Gaye's -- extra potent, extra sharp, but somehow the epitome of their whole artistic project. Very, very big fan of this.
One of those albums that doesn't announce its greatness to you in a big, booming voice, but lets you discover it slowly. Really, really solid stuff.
Some outstanding atmospheric work on this album, like an exercise in musical architecture. The end result is a nice, middle-rise, mixed-use residential block with community grocery stores and delis on all the ground floors.
Is it lifechanging? Not really, no. Is it still a John Coltrane album? Absolutely.
One of Mayfield's better projects, a great couple of classics that get their message across without overstaying their welcome. Super, super pleasant.
