Retaining a societal consciousness, Down Tools is not so much a party record but one that surveys the damage after a storm, picking up the pieces with an increasing dose of humour as well as world weariness.
Down Tools is another fine Mush record and maybe even their best album yet.
Mush come up with some quite impeccable melodies and playing on Down Tools.
A more free-flowing and abstract affair than its predecessor, albeit one that continues to captivate with its lackadaisical melodies that lope effortlessly over a swirling mix of psych-garage, art-rock and post-punk.
Down Tools shows Mush can smooth down their surfaces a bit and still sound challenging and subversively witty, and as long as they do, they'll be worth hearing.
Dan Hyndman supplies a reliably cryptic stream of absurdist prattle, though his decision to stick with largely adlibbed lyrics robs Down Tools of some of the force and focus of last year's excellent Lines Redacted.
While these are great influences, the striking melodic similarities dominate Down Tools and ultimately distract from the moments where something good is cooking.
The instrumentals are quite good, but often times the singing is just not up there and the instruments do not complement the singing very well, so it's kinda jarring at times. It does get better by the later half when either the instruments get a bit crazier or the singing calms down a bit. But it is still pretty good in general.
SCORE: 5.4/7.0
Still sounds like that kid from South Park, just with a little more toned down musical style this time. less punchy but also a little less unique than previous efforts.
Now saying this, it doesn’t sound bad at all and their hearts are in the right spot
