Whatever her earlier motivations, Roach is a brutally honest and brave interrogation of self, a struggle powered by Folick’s towering vocals as she plunders the depths of her psyche, in songs that confidently straddle taut indie rock and mainstream pop, illuminating both.
Miya Folick is well-aware of who and what dulls her light, and on Roach, she finds the strength within her to not only regain her spark, but to build it into a fireball.
Miya Folick orbits and sometimes grasps something transcendent about living through unprecedented times on ROACH.
This album was produced by the same people who work with Big Thief, Weyes Blood, and Soccer Mommy, so it was practically impossible for it to be bad. It's important not to forget that the artist behind the album is the incredibly talented Miya Folick herself of course.
In anticipation to ROACH, the second full length effort from singer and songwriter Miya Folik, I recently checked out her 2007 EP from last year and although all the tracks off that EP are also found here, the new additions further illustrate the talent Folik processes.
This is a very strong indie pop record and Miya is super underrated in general. "Mommy" is one of the best songs ever and I just really loved the vibes on this one.
This is the most 'LA girl in her 20s' album ever and I love it. Enya Umanzer-core. I imagine this would be best listened to with mini sunglasses and a Juul and a cold brew coffee out of a mason jar.
STANDOUTS: bad thing, get out of my house, drugs or people, mommy, tetherball, so clear, ordinary
